L’Artisan Passage d’Enfer ~ perfume review

Posted by Robin on 30 March 2007 40 Comments

L'Artisan Passage d'Enfer fragrance

Passage d’Enfer was the first L’Artisan fragrance I fell in love with and purchased, and as the line eventually came to be a great favorite of mine, it would hold a special place in my affections even if only for that. As things go, quite a few of the fragrances I purchased in the early days of my perfume obsession now sit lonely and ignored in the back of my cabinet, but Passage d’Enfer, along with a few other old favorites (Diptyque Philosykos, Carthusia Mediterraneo) can count on regular wearings…

Juozas Statkevicius (aka Josef Statkus) Eau de Parfum ~ fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 6 March 2007 39 Comments

Juozas Statkevicius aka Josef Statkus

Lithuanian designer Juozas Statkevicius launched his debut Eau de Parfum several years ago, and it has just recently reached the United States. The perfumer is Fabrice Pellegrin, and the notes include coriander, jasmine, patchouli, incense, vanilla, benzoin, amber, cashmere wood and musk.

I am rather late to this bandwagon*, but it is a worthy bandwagon so I’m jumping right on. We are lucky that Juozas Statkevicius launched his first fragrance before he became a household name (assuming he ever does), because it is far from the usual designer fare, and as we can see from the contrast between Matthew Williamson’s mainstream perfume debut and what we know about his personal preferences from the smaller-scale (and now discontinued) Incense fragrance he released with Miller Harris, once a designer hits the big time, it is all over scent-wise…

Home Fragrance: A Floral Trio ~ Baieido’s Daffodil, Lavender and Rose Incense

Posted by Kevin on 2 March 2007 7 Comments

Baieido Lavender & Rose incense

In my garden, two events signal the arrival of spring: the return of “my” almost-tame, almost-pigeon-sized male robin and the shoots of daffodils emerging from the soil. The robin has been singing, nesting, and begging for food at my home for seven springs and summers — I hope he survived another winter. He’s such an appreciative bird, so encouraging as I cut the thick grass and towering weeds in the yard and expose delicious bugs, provide piles of nest-building materials and toss him earthworms to eat. The daffodils, often blooming in cool, wet weather, smell “chilled”, their fresh green-pollen scent restrained by the nippy, moist air. When the flowers are cut for bouquets and brought inside the warm house, their fragrance grows stronger, sultry, but still possesses a dewy quality.

I have found precious few floral incense blends that smell like real flowers but I keep sniffing…

Comme des Garcons 2 Man ~ fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 14 February 2007 16 Comments

Comme des Garçons 2 Man print advert

Comme des Garçons released Comme des Garçons 2 Man in 2004. It was developed by perfumer Mark Buxton. If you find it at all helpful, the tag line is “a worker, a man who loves his work” (that’s two strikes for me), and the notes are incense, white smoke, saffron flowers, nutmeg, kumquat, mint, vetiver, mahogany and leather.

Comme des Garçons 2 Man, like the other Mark Buxton fragrances discussed over the past week (Comme des Garçons Eau de Parfum, Comme des Garçons White, Comme des Garçons 2) explores themes of spices, woods and incense. The top notes have a buzz of citrus, similar to the opening of “regular” 2 but perhaps not quite so metallic or high-pitched. There is the tiniest whiff of the inky stuff, then we get the familiar spices…

Home Fragrance: Baieido Honey-Scented Incense Sticks

Posted by Kevin on 7 January 2007 2 Comments

Baieido Honey scented incenseI really appreciate smokeless incense in wintertime. I love the rich fragrance incense provides — but who wants a tightly closed house full of smoke? One of Baieido's (see Baieido Hinoki incense review for background) newest smokeless incense offerings is Honey.

Baieido's Honey incense smells sweet. I bought it unsniffed and when I smelled the incense sticks in the box I was worried. I’m not a lover of “sweets” when it comes to most fragrances, either for the body or the home. Baieido’s Honey incense brought to mind: “candy shop” “carnival” “state fair” “boardwalk” — it smelled like spun sugar, boiling sugar…
