Sonoma Scent Studio Incense Pure ~ fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 29 April 2010 75 Comments

incense smoke

I love incense in almost all its (perfume) guises, from gothic to boho to meditative. Sonoma Scent Studio’s new Incense Pure, in my own entirely idiosyncratic fragrance family classification system, goes neatly into the “outdoor incense” category, a group that also includes Tauer Perfumes Incense extrême and Comme des Garçons Ouarzazate. Both of those fragrances have a contemplative quality, but they’re too airy and fresh to be churchy.

Incense Pure, despite being denser than either Incense extrême or Ouarzazate, likewise smells like the outdoors, and in this case, a specific time and place: it reminds me of early fall in northern New Mexico…

Pinpricks of milky-white sap

Posted by Robin on 10 February 2010 5 Comments

The records show that frankincense was produced here as far back as 7,000 BCE. He produces an army knife. He used to be a member of the Sultan's Special Forces. With a practised flick, he cuts a strip of bark from the trunk of one of the Boswellia sacra trees. Pinpricks of milky-white sap appear on the wood and, very slowly, start to ooze out.

La Via del Profumo Balsamo della Mecca ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 3 February 2010 61 Comments

Middle Eastern perfumes are intense and often leave a trail behind the wearer that a well-trained, or even a lazy, dog can track for days. Hansel and Gretel should have ditched the breadcrumbs and worn an Arabian fragrance to find their way back home. (sniff, sniff…“We came THIS way!”) One either adores such perfumes, or shuns them. I adore them and that’s appropriate with the new La Via del Profumo Balsamo della Mecca because adoration was part of its creation: it was inspired by a trip perfumer Dominique Dubrana took to Mecca during Hajj.

Balsamo della Mecca contains natural notes of cistus labdanum, frankincense, benzoin, agarwood, tonka bean, tobacco, Indian tuberose and Damask rose. Balsamo della Mecca begins with rich, ‘leather-y’ labdanum and smoky frankincense. As the fragrance develops, interesting facets emerge — accords that smell of unsweetened cinnamon, “cola” and musky tobacco. The fragrance is dense and only lightens after hours of wear when the notes seem to “dry out” and turn powdery — a lovely phase when frankincense and benzoin/tonka predominate…

Olivier Durbano Turquoise ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 30 September 2009 31 Comments

Turquoise

Ask me what a diamond ‘smells’ like, and I’ll have to think about it (and probably spout some easy associations most people wouldn’t challenge — a diamond smells like icy champagne, silk, red roses, ‘gold’…). Ask me what turquoise smells like and I immediately have an idea, not based on the scent of the gemstone but on a place I associate with turquoise: Tibet. Tibetan Buddhist jewelry and religious implements are encrusted with blue turquoise — which can symbolize the sky (infinity), bodies of water, or spiritual transcendence. I’ve not been to Tibet but my imagined Tibet smells ‘cold’ and fresh, with mineral/salt, incense, and floral (think: devotional offerings) aromas thrown in for some heft. Olivier Durbano Turquoise Eau de Parfum* fits into my Tibet-turquoise fantasies.

Years ago at the Seattle International Film Festival, I watched The Salt Men of Tibet and was amazed at the dramatic landscape shown in the film, and the high-altitude lakes of Tibet (Lake Namtso is the highest salt water lake in the world). To my nose, Turquoise, the perfume, is a “salty” marine fragrance…

Czech & Speake Citrus Paradisi, No. 88 and Frankincense & Myrrh ~ fragrance reviews

Posted by Kevin on 1 July 2009 56 Comments

Czech & Speake colognes

There’s something strange about buying a perfume from the same people who manufacture your toilet bowl and bathroom sink. Imagine Kohler or American Standard coming out with a line of luxury perfumes in the United States — would anyone buy them? U.K. bath/kitchen fittings maker Czech & Speake has had great success with its home and personal fragrances, and today I’m reviewing three of Czech & Speake’s nine perfumes.

Citrus Paradisi

California grapefruit, coriander, pepper, patchouli, oak moss

Citrus Paradisi starts with intense grapefruit (smooth and rich) and spices (accent on the coriander); a ‘polite’ patchouli note and some sheer moss comprise the base notes. This is a pleasant, “warm” citrus cologne…
