Ambra del Nepal by i Profumi di Firenze ~ fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 17 November 2005 24 Comments

i Profumi di Firenze Ambra del Nepal perfume

We have been extraordinarily lucky with the weather this month: it has been unseasonably warm up until today. Today, it is cold. I am not ready for cold, but it does give me an excuse to reach for one of my favorite winter fragrances: Ambra del Nepal by the Italian apothecary line i Profumi di Firenze. The notes are amber, cardamom and vanilla.

Ambra del Nepal is probably the only amber fragrance I really adore. The amber smells pale rather than dark, but at the same time, it is deep, rich and resinous, with a whisper of dry incense smoke. It is sweet, but the smoke and a generous dash of cardamom temper the sweetness so that it never feels heavy or cloying, even as the vanilla intensifies on the dry down. It is one of very few ambers that doesn’t turn sour on my skin after an hour…

Vaniglia del Madagascar and Zenzero by i Profumi di Firenze

i Profumi di Firenze fragrances

Zenzero is the latest fragrance release from the Italian apothecary line i Profumi di Firenze. It is based on their Vaniglia del Madagascar perfume, which features vanilla orchid and vanilla bean; Zenzero adds white ginger.

Vaniglia del Madagascar is an uncomplicated vanilla perfume with a subtle floral note. It starts out smelling like pure vanilla extract, and dries down to something more like vanilla cake…

Perfume of the day: i Profumi di Firenze Magnolia Dolce

Posted by Robin on 3 April 2005 20 Comments

magnolia

Magnolia Dolce is the latest release from i Profumi di Firenze, and features magnolia petals “bathed in Damascus Rose water for 10 days to capture their delectable creaminess”.

The top notes are sweet and slightly sharp, with possibly some lily of the valley or another, similar floral. It calms to a creamy magnolia with a touch of rose. The dry down is very soft, with just the tiniest hint of powder. I am still guessing here, but I get an impression of iris, and maybe some sandalwood in the base…

Orange blossom fragrances: a few Italians

Bitter OrangeBitter Orange

After trying Santa Maria Novella Acqua di Colonia yesterday, I thought I would start today by spraying on as many orange blossom perfumes as I could dig out of my jumble of samples & bottles. There were more than I thought, so I am limiting myself to the Italians. I can’t wait for summer — it is so much easier to try a whole mess of fragrances at once when you can go sleeveless and apply right up the arms to the shoulder. Paper test strips just aren’t as much fun.

One of my favorite Italian orange blossom scents is i Profumi di Firenze Zagara. It starts rather sharp and very heavy on the bergamot, but calms to a lovely orange blossom with citrus notes and just the right amount of sweetness. It is very sparkling, cheerful and summery, and has good lasting power…
