Hermes Jardin Sur Le Toit ~ fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 7 April 2011 121 Comments

Hermès Un Jardin Sur Le Toit fragrance

Un Jardin Sur Le Toit, the latest in the garden series from Hermès, spurns the exotic inspirations of its predecessors (Un Jardin en Méditerranée, Un Jardin Sur Le Nil and Un Jardin Après La Mousson); instead perfumer Jean-Claude Ellena celebrates the rooftop garden at the Hermès building at 24 Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré in Paris (although for some of us, a rooftop garden on the Rue du Faubourg Saint Honoré is hardly the stuff of everyday life).

And what, pray tell, do we get from the Hermès rooftop garden? Apples and pears, apples and pears. Apples and pears, though hardly new to perfume, seem to be the notes du jour, and as I’ve already mentioned they’re not exactly my favorites.

Jardin Sur Le Toit starts out grapefruity-citrusy and sharp…

Hermes Jardin Sur Le Toit perfume

Hermès will launch Un Jardin Sur Le Toit (garden on the roof) in April. The inspiration: the garden on the roof of the Hermès building at 24 Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré in Paris. The new unisex fragrance is the fourth in the garden series that already includes Un Jardin en Méditerranée (2003), Un Jardin Sur Le Nil (2005) and Un Jardin Après La Mousson (2008)…

Hermes Un Jardin Apres La Mousson ~ perfume review

Hermes Jardin Apres La Mousson fragrance

I’m sure many of you have had this experience: you read about a new fragrance. It sounds perfect. You start to build a smell-picture in your mind. You wait, and then you wait some more. It finally launches, but is only sold someplace inconvenient (there are few phrases in perfumespeak more dispiriting to me than “exclusive to Saks”). Finally, you get your hands on it. You spray, and — oh! It is not at all what you expected.

Un Jardin après la Mousson is the latest from Hermès and the third fragrance in their Jardin series, and it isn’t the first of perfumer Jean-Claude Ellena’s creations to surprise me in this way, although more often than not, I manage to adjust. I liked Osmanthe Yunnan as soon as I smelled it, but it somehow wasn’t what I thought it would be, and I could not help but feel a sliver of disappointment…

Hermes Un Jardin Apres La Mousson ~ new fragrance

Hermes Un Jardin Apres La Mousson perfumeUn Jardin après la Mousson will be the third fragrance in the Jardin series from Hermès, and is expected to launch this coming May. Un Jardin après la Mousson was inspired by “India in monsoon season”, and follows Un Jardin en Méditerranée (2003) and Un Jardin Sur Le Nil (2005).

For the third fragrance in the Jardins series, Jean-Claude Ellena, Hermès' in-house perfumer, traveled to Kerala, in southwestern India, where he was inspired by nature's revival following the region's annual rainy season…

Hermes Un Jardin Sur Le Nil fragrance review

Hermes Jardin Sur Le Nil fragrance

The latest from Jean-Claude Ellena at Hermès, Un Jardin Sur Le Nil, is finally available at Neiman Marcus. I was not able to score a sample (drat!) but did give it a quick try. The verdict: an absolute must have, but as I am too cheap to pay full price, I’ll be waiting impatiently for it to appear at the online discounters. The notes are: green mango, lotus flower, aromatic rushes, incense, sycamore wood.

It starts with a buzz of citrus (grapefruit? maybe some lime?) and intense green notes; the green mango lends some fruitiness but is thankfully not overly sweet…
