The daily lemming

Posted by Robin on 8 April 2020 11 Comments

Will we ever be able to buy hand sanitizer again? Who knows. But if this one ever comes back in stock, I'm planning to buy it: Grove Collaborative Hydrating Hand Sanitizer in Blood Orange. "This is not your average hand sanitizer! Our 7.5 oz gel is fast-absorbing and eliminates 99.9% of germs for clean hands in a flash. We've added coconut oil for hydration + it has antibacterial and anti-fungal properties and 100% natural essential oils for a lovely blood orange scent." $7.95 for 221 ml. (And if you have a favorite hand sanitizer that smells great, do tell us about it!)

A back to school lemming: EO's Everyone hand sanitizer gels: "Share the love, not the germs! Everyone sanitizers are 99.9% effective against common germs and not made with any harsh chemicals. Everyone sanitizers are formulated for every body and priced for every budget, so use generously. Only the subtle scent of Lemon essential oil and Coconut extracts are left behind—no sticky residue. This bottle is great for purses or backpacks, and is TSA-approved for your carry-on. Packaged in a recycled bottle." That's the description for Coconut + Lemon (above right), there's also Peppermint + Citrus (above left) and Lavender. $2.99 for 60 ml at Smallflower. (They are also available in spray form, and in 960 ml refill jugs.)

CleanWell All-Natural Hand Sanitizer ~ scented body product review

CleanWell All-Natural Hand Sanitizer Orange VanillaCleanWell All-Natural Hand Sanitizer Original scent

Every day for the past few weeks I’ve glanced at the local newspapers and noticed large-type headlines about a FLU EPIDEMIC. I’m generally healthy, so I didn’t bother getting a flu vaccine; instead, I’m just trying to eat healthily, get enough sleep and wash my hands frequently. For moments when I’m on the move and I can’t get to a sink with hot water and soap, I like to carry a CleanWell All-Natural Hand Sanitizer. It’s not a magic bullet, of course, but it lessens my anxiety about germs from stairway railings, subway poles and any other unsavory surfaces I might have touched.

CleanWell offers a range of liquid hand soaps, cleaning products and disinfectant wipes, but the All-Natural Hand Sanitizer is my favorite. This is a liquid product, packaged in a slim container with a flip top and a spray dispenser; a few spritzes into the palm of a hand gives enough sanitizer for one thorough use…

Intelligent Nutrients Hand Purifier ~ scented body product

Intelligent Nutrients Hand Purifier

You don’t have to be obsessive-compulsive to worry about germs these days. It’s cold season, it’s flu season, and worse yet, now we have to fear the H1N1 virus (“swine flu”) too. Accordingly, sales of antibacterial soaps and hand gels have risen dramatically in recent months. However, there are some problems with mass-market antibacterial products: the ones with triclosan pose possible health concerns, and the ones with too much alcohol leave your hands dry and cracked, and thus vulnerable to all kinds of irritation and infection.

For these reasons, not to mention the harsh window-cleaner smell of so many drugstore antibacterial products, I’ve long preferred alternatives like EO Hand Sanitizer. Lately, I’m even more pleased with the new Hand Purifier from Intelligent Nutrients. It’s a gel product (rather than a liquid that runs down your wrists and onto the front of your winter coat when you try to apply it on the go), and it feels like a lightweight hand lotion…

Be well: Buddha Nose I Booster Salve and EO Hand Sanitizer with Organic Lavender

Buddha Nose I Booster SalveEO Hand Sanitzer Lavender

We can get sick any time of year, of course, but winter is a particularly treacherous season for illnesses that sweep through the household or the office, dragging us down for a few days or even a few weeks: the many-symptomed cold virus, the stomach bug, the dreaded flu. And yes, we should all protect our own good health by eating well, getting enough sleep, taking vitamins, and exercising. I also like to supplement my efforts with some good-smelling products that help me to fight the unavoidable millions of germs around me.

The small, whimsically named company Buddha Nose sells several “aromatic products” that promote physical and emotional wellness. Its I Booster Salve contains a blend of essential oils (all organic or wild-crafted) that are known for their anti-bacterial properties, to bolster the immune system against infection. The salve looks like a dark-yellow wax, and it’s packaged in an easy-to-carry tin, like a shoe-polish container. This product can be applied as soon as you start to feel under the weather…
