Lorenzo Villoresi Yerbamate fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 29 November 2006 17 Comments

Lorenzo Villoresi Yerbamate

Lorenzo Villoresi recently became the first independent perfumer to win the Prix François Coty. In his honor, today I’m revisiting Yerbamate, a 2001 fragrance from the Fantasy Collection. Yerbamate was named for the South American plant that is brewed to make mate tea. The ad copy describes the scent as…

A boundless greenland touching the sky. The scent of grass, of new-mown hay, of countless herbs and flowers scattered in the fields, stirred by the wind and warmed by the sun. A lonely fire in the meadows, the quiet ritual of tea and mate a gentle veil of smoke, rising and lightly embracing…

Hermes Eau d’Orange Verte & Concentre d’Orange Verte: fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 25 July 2006 12 Comments

Hermes Eau d'Orange Verte

Hermès introduced Eau d’Orange Verte in 1979 (the original name was Eau de Cologne d’Hermès; it was renamed Eau d’Orange Verte in 1997). It was created by perfumer Francoise Caron and has notes of bergamot, lemon, mandarin, mint, jasmine, orange blossom, patchouli, moss and cedar.

Eau d’Orange Verte is a citrus chypre, along the lines of Ô de Lancôme or Eau de Rochas. It starts with a slap of citrus, very sharp and acidic. The sharpness fades into a very dry orange under a heavy veil of herbal green and what smells to me like petitgrain. There is a whisper of dry florals, and a lovely mossy woods base.

It is currently marketed as a unisex fragrance, but I believe it was originally introduced as a men’s. When I first tried it several years ago, I thought it too masculine to wear…

Prescriptives Calyx: an appreciation

Posted by Robin on 2 June 2006 39 Comments

Prescriptives Calyx advertPrescriptives Calyx advert

[Update: in 2013, Prescriptives Calyx became Clinique Calyx, the Prescriptives brand having now been phased out by Estee Lauder. It seems to be much fresher and less sparkling than it was, but I have no idea when that happened. Likely it’s been reformulated more than once over the years.]

Calyx was the debut fragrance from the skincare and color cosmetics line Prescriptives. It was created by perfumer Sophia Grojsman and launched in 1986; the notes include mandarin, bergamot, passion fruit, mango, guava, spearmint, muguet, lily, jasmine, marigold, melon, rose, cyclamen, raspberry, musk, moss and cedar…

Diptyque Eau de Lierre fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 2 May 2006 24 Comments

Ivy

Diptyque’s Eau de Lierre, conceived as an homage to the ivy growing around the country homes of the line’s founders, launches this week. The fragrance features fresh notes, pepper, ivy, water notes, musk and wood.

Eau de Lierre starts with ivy, heavily peppered. It is green and slightly bitter, but nothing like the explosion of green that opens L’Ombre dans L’Eau: this is considerably lighter and airier, and much less astringent. Although I prefer the more concentrated approach of L’Ombre, the Lierre is probably the more wearable of the two fragrances, at least in the early stages, and I rather liked the breezy quality of the top notes…

Fragrance review: Memory of Kindness by CB I Hate Perfume

Posted by Robin on 12 April 2006 26 Comments

tomato

Memory of Kindness is one of the latest fragrance releases from CB I Hate Perfume. It was inspired by a childhood memory of crawling under a tangle of tomato vines, and the notes are fresh tomato leaves, green tomato vines and garden earth.

This is a must try for green fragrance lovers, especially those of you who adore the scent of tomato leaf. It captures their distinctive bitter-green herbal aroma perfectly…
