The prized white flower

Posted by Robin on 31 December 2018 5 Comments

The pair started planting jasmine grandiflorum - a key ingredient in top French perfumes like J’adore L’Or or Chanel number 5 - in their farm in June. It is back-breaking work as every tiny flower has to be harvested by hand over a three-month period.

But if all goes to plan, within four to five years, they will be the second biggest producers of the prized white flower in France.

Protected treasures

Posted by Robin on 29 November 2018 2 Comments

Perfume-making techniques used in Grasse, a southerly French commune where iris, jasmine and other fragrant plants have long flourished, won U.N. recognition on Wednesday, boosting a bid by local industry champions to lure back more specialist growers.

The United Nation’s cultural agency said it had added the skills linked to cultivating flowers and blending fragrances in Grasse to its list of protected treasures.

The perfume capital of the world

At the time, perfume blogs and a few books were lifting the veil off a closely guarded industry. I had fallen in love not only with perfume, but also with the deft and curious descriptions of fragrance at the hands of gifted perfume critics, namely Luca Turin and Tania Sanchez who together wrote the vastly entertaining “Perfumes: The A-Z Guide.” I felt as though I had discovered two new strains of art — not to mention the most underrated of the five senses.

More recently, I decided to take a deeper look into the fragrance industry and knew there was no better place to do this than Grasse, France, a medieval town in southern Provence known as the perfume capital of the world.

Fragrant roots in Grasse

Posted by Robin on 9 August 2016 4 Comments

The re-estabishment of these fragrant roots in Grasse by two behemoth brands at a time when a potent cocktail of geopolitical unrest, exchange-rate volatility and economic uncertainty have weighed on many parts of the luxury market is not surprising. Global sales of premium perfumes are expected to hit $29 billion this year, and are set to grow 3 to 4 percent annually through 2020, according to the research group Euromonitor International.

Intangible cultural heritage

Posted by Robin on 10 June 2016 Leave a Comment

It is this rich heritage that the flower growers in the southeast French town of Grasse, including [Joseph] Mul, a well-known figure in the industry, are now pushing to have recognised by the UN's cultural agency, UNESCO.

They have been joined in their crusade by France's perfume makers as well as the companies responsible for processing their raw materials. [...] [Jacques Cavallier-Belletrud] has joined the chorus calling for Grasse's centuries of perfume expertise to be added to UNESCO's list of "intangible cultural heritage" following France's application in March 2015.
