Demeter Dulce de Leche, Espresso, Chai Tea & Whiskey Tobacco ~ fragrance reviews

Posted by Robin on 26 December 2013 48 Comments

Demeter Dulce de Leche & Espresso

Feeling a little pinched after holiday spending? I know I am. So today seemed a perfect day to talk about Demeter. I am fond of Demeter, and was surprised to see I hadn’t reviewed anything from the house since 2009, when I talked about Beetroot and Pruning Shears (thumbs up on both). I don’t like everything Demeter makes — I don’t even have time to try everything they make. Life is short, and Demeter is prolific. But every so often, it’s fun to buy a bunch of their miniatures. Six dollars (6!!) gets you a 15 ml travel size, although you’ll have to shell out a few dollars more if you want spray rather than splash. No, they’re not high art (although some of them might just qualify as conceptual art), and no, they’re not long lasting, and no, they don’t always smell like what they’re supposed to smell like. But sometimes they’re spot on, and often, they’re just plain fun.

On the docket today: Dulce de Leche, Espresso, Chai Tea and Whiskey Tobacco…

Imaginary Authors Cape Heartache & Dawn Spencer Hurwitz Amouse Bouche ~ fragrance review

strawberries

Strawberry in perfume. Sounds scary, doesn’t it? Strawberry is a note so familiar from jam, yogurt, and Bonne Bell Lip Smackers that it seems like it would instantly deep-six a fragrance. Strawberry carries a lot of baggage.

Imaginary Authors Cape Heartache and Dawn Spencer Hurwitz Amouse Bouche feature strawberries in ways that are fresh and interesting. For me, neither fragrance makes me hungry for shortcake and Cool Whip, and they both lend a new appreciation for strawberry — in completely different ways.

Cape Heartache takes strawberry into unexpected territory by butching it up with resinous notes…

Biehl Parfumkunstwerke PC02 ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 4 October 2013 12 Comments

turkish delight

I recently reviewed PC01 from Biehl Parfumkustwerke, since I felt I hadn’t been paying enough attention to this brand. It wasn’t quite “me,” but I went on to sample PC02, which has turned out to be more my style. Like PC01, it was developed by perfumer Patricia Choux, and its official description reads “circus and cotton candy. giggling butterflies in the belly. maximum high spirit.”

PC02 has “risky but delicious” top notes of bergamot, cardamom, and spices, a “powdery, spicy, and flowery” heart of peony, Turkish delight, and freesia, and a “very sensual, warm, and erotic” base of blonde wood, patchouli, tonka bean, honey, and musk. If you’re guessing that this is a sweet fragrance: yes, it is. If you really don’t care for gourmands, you probably won’t fall for PC02. If, on the other hand, you used to wear Keiko Mecheri Loukhoum, Hanae Mori Butterfly or Parfumerie Generale Brulure de Rose and now you’re looking for something just a little more subtle, PC02 should appeal to you…

Lanvin Me ~ fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 23 May 2013 26 Comments

Lanvin Me advert

Lanvin’s latest fragrance for women is the new Lanvin Me. Per Lanvin, its credo is “be myself, become ME”, but it also promises to embody elegance, style and Parisian chic — if that doesn’t sound like you, perhaps you need Lanvin Me all the more?

Elegance, style and Parisian chic are personified here by a fruity and sweet floral gourmand, with a decent dose of blueberry in the opening and a full-bodied floral heart. There’s also plenty of licorice (the notes: mandarin, blueberry, licorice, rose, tuberose and sandalwood). Like nearly any licorice-heavy fragrance, it calls to mind the gold standard, Lolita Lempicka, but only vaguely — this one has a warm woody base, but without the Thierry Mugler Angel-inspired dark patchouli sugar. It might be more useful to think of it as a kind of cross between Diesel Loverdose and Viktor & Rolf Flowerbomb…

Jo Malone Rose Water & Vanilla ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 17 May 2013 42 Comments

Jo Malone Rose Water & Vanilla

I tried Jo Malone’s Rose Water & Vanilla when it was first released, but since I was under the impression that the “Cologne Intense Collection” (which included Rose Water & Vanilla) was a limited edition line, I didn’t bother to review it. Now that it seems to have become part of the permanent collection, I’ve revisited it and I’m still intrigued.

The Cologne Intense Collection is a group of “distinctive scents inspired by the rich, sensory experience of the Middle East,” and Rose Water & Vanilla is inspired by “delectable Turkish Delight”: “Rose Water and comforting vanilla are enriched with a succulent bite of rose loukoum. Tempting and addictive.” Elsewhere, Jo Malone describes this fragrance as “an elegant powdery scent that blends spicy sweet Orange Blossoms, the richness of Vanilla and an underlying smokiness from the agarwood.”

I’m sure I’m not the only one who looks back with fondness on the craze for loukhoum-inspired fragrances that swept through various perfume message boards in 2004…
