Fragrance of the day: Piment et Chocolat by Dawn Spencer Hurwitz

Posted by Robin on 5 December 2005 41 Comments

Dawn Spencer Hurwitz Piment et Chocolat perfumeDawn Spencer Hurwitz Piment et Chocolat perfume

Dawn Spencer Hurwitz introduced Piment et Chocolat in 2003. The fragrance features notes of black pepper, paprika, pimento, red chili, clove, nutmeg, cinnamon, cocoa beans and chocolate. It starts with sweet chocolate and very strong, almost sneeze-worthy pepper notes. As it dries down, the sweetness largely disappears, and the initial kick from the pepper is tempered by the other spices; just enough red chili remains to add some heat. The end result is a warm, almost dusty combination of spices and dry cocoa.

It strikes a nice balance — it is foody, but not candied, and softer than the notes might indicate. It is a cozy kind of fragrance, perfect for a cold winter night spent by the fire. But it is in the Parfums des Beaux Arts line, and it isn’t cheap: 1/3 oz of Eau de Parfum is $60, 1 oz is $135. I like it, but after three tries, I don’t adore it enough to pay the price…

La Perla Eclix fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 25 October 2005 24 Comments

La Perla Eclix perfume

Eclix is one of my all time favorite comfort scents. It was launched by the high-end lingerie design house La Perla in 2000, and the fragrance features notes of bergamot, blackcurrant leaves, osmanthus, waterlily, may rose, almond blossom, exotic woods, cocoa and white musk.

Eclix starts very fresh and citrusy with a hint of green; in addition to the bergamot, there is a something that smells very much like lemon or lime…

Perfume for a sweet tooth: Molinard Tendre Friandise

Posted by Robin on 24 October 2005 23 Comments

Molinard Tendre Friandise fragrance

Molinard is an old Grasse perfumery established in 1849, and still family-owned. Their best known fragrance is probably Habanita, which was introduced in the early 1920s. Tendre Friandise (Sweet Candies) was released in 2003; the notes are freesia, pear, lime, mirabelle plum, jasmine, sandalwood, amber, cedar, nougat, praline, white musk and vanilla.

For the most part, I prefer my fragrances dry rather than sweet. The phrase “overly sweet” appears frequently in my own testing notes, and usually means that the fragrance was dismissed. But every so often I want a dose of candy, and when I do, I reach for this favorite from Molinard…

Comme des Garcons Series 7: Sweet ~ fragrance review

Comme des Garcons Series 7: Sweet

Series 7 is the latest themed set of fragrances from Comme des Garçons. The series scents tend to be less complex than the “regular” perfumes in the line, and many of them focus on a single note or accord.

The sweet series strikes me as less adventurous in concept than the other series Comme des Garçons has released so far, although of course, adventurous does not always sell. Garage, for instance, from the synthetic series, is a brilliant evocation of the concrete floor of, obviously, a garage, but I would be very surprised to learn that it is a big seller for the line. At any rate, I have tested 4 of the 5 scents in Series 7; here are my brief impressions…

S-Perfume 100% Love fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 11 March 2005 18 Comments

S-Perfume 100% Love

S-Perfume is a small, independent perfume company in New York City that currently sells 4 fragrances, all developed in collaboration with well-known noses. 100% Love was created by perfumer Sophia Grojsman, best known for Yves Saint Laurent Paris and Lancôme Trésor. S-Perfume describes 100% Love as the “pulpy erotic part of a secret red fruit, the soft and wet velvety skin of rose petals in water, and a mystical “concoction” of incense and black chocolate.”

100% Love starts out mostly chocolate and incense…
