5 Perfumes for: Gourmand Deniers

Kenzo Ca Sent Beau perfume

The dessert course has never been among my many vices. I can track a fresh bowl of heavily buttered popcorn from several blocks away, but the Triple Brownie Blackout cake has never called my name. Of course, I like chocolate — those people who claim not to like it always make me suspicious — but it must be very dark, and in fact, I will happily eat that 98% cocoa solids stuff with the consistency of chalk. Unfortunately, I do still drink pop, although I blame the carbonation there: I choose mineral water when it’s available. I love traveling in the U.S. because of the wide availability of brewed, unsweetened iced tea. (In Canada, if you are foolish enough to ask for an ice tea, you will likely get a syrup-based product out of a drink gun. If you can finish it, you are a better person than I am.) When I am cajoled into a dessert, ice cream or coffee bar by one of the many sugar-addicted members of my family, my first question to the server is always: “Which option would you say is the least sweet?”

This is usually my first question to a perfume sales assistant, too. I self-identify as a lover of bitter, salty, herbal and spicy smells. Looking over my fragrance collection, however, I am forced to contemplate the possibility I have been deluding myself…

Demeter Egg Nog & Crayon ~ quick fragrance reviews

Posted by Robin on 5 November 2007 15 Comments

Demeter Egg Nog perfume

In introducing their new Egg Nog fragrance, Demeter made the claim “If you love Egg Nog, you’ll love Demeter’s Egg Nog…and if you hate it, maybe you just haven’t had GOOD Egg Nog”. I am in a different bind: I can’t remember what egg nog really tastes like. I haven’t had it in years. I don’t think I ever liked it, but honestly I’m not even sure…

M by Mariah Carey ~ fragrance review

M by Mariah Carey perfume advert

It seems like there was a whole spate of articles not too long ago proclaiming that celebrity fragrances were “over”, they weren’t selling any more, etc. etc. If there is any truth to the notion, you won’t find the evidence at the fragrance counters this month. Mariah Carey is only the latest of celebrity fragrance debuts, and if you mean to smell them all, you’ve a long road ahead of you yet this year.

Mariah Carey went with the name M. It isn’t wildly creative on its own merits, and it seems even less so given that we just got L from Gwen Stefani. Are full words too risky in today’s over-saturated fragrance market? What will happen when all the letters of the alphabet are used up? We’ve already got F (Ferragamo), another L (Lolita Lempicka), S (Scherrer), V (Valentino), XX (Hugo Boss), and probably others that aren’t coming to mind at the moment.

The M fragrance itself was developed by perfumers Carlos Benaim and Loc Dong, and is advertised as a floriental…

Guerlain Iris Ganache ~ fragrance review

Guerlain Iris Ganache perfume

Ok, so anyone who reads Now Smell This regularly already knows I love iris. Prada’s new Infusion d’Iris is only the latest in a long list of iris fragrances that make me swoon, and I’m still mourning Chanel’s 28 La Pausa, which I adore but refuse to buy inasmuch as it is just too costly for such an ephemeral experience.

But I don’t love everything iris…

Estee Lauder Pleasures Delight ~ fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 25 July 2007 22 Comments

Estee Lauder Pleasures Delight perfume

Life is sweet. Treat yourself to something delicious… a playful side of pleasures that’s simply irresistible. This floral confection blends notes of juicy pomegranate, whipped strawberry meringue and tempting caramel with a sprinkling of sugared rose petals, dewy freesia, white peony and fresh greens. How can you resist?

That’s the description of Estee Lauder‘s new Pleasures Delight, and I have to say it sounds like something I’d have no trouble resisting at all. Strawberry + caramel isn’t even vaguely appealing to me (yes, I’m looking at you, Miss Dior Cherie).

But Pleasures Delight was actually something of a pleasant surprise. It is more of an oriental gourmand than the description above implies…
