Candles by Diptyque, Otherland, Ormonde Jayne & Bougies la Francaise ~ home fragrance reviews

Posted by Kevin on 31 January 2019 13 Comments

There’s nothing like a winter’s night (or dim afternoon) with flickering candles burning inside dark rooms. Add a rainstorm, pot of strong Assam tea or Mexican hot chocolate, a gingerbread cake right out of the oven, stacks of thick European design, gardening and fashion magazines, some seed catalogs, and cookbooks to read…and I’m set for hours of light-hearted enjoyment (before the denouement: a nap).

I’d like to introduce you to some candles I’ve discovered over the last several months; all of them have great, intense aromas.

Diptyque Noisetier: hazelnut, clove, cedar, patchouli, vetiver

Noisetier invites a walk on the shady land, fertile and dry. A spicy, woody fragrance warmed by a smoky touch. — Diptyque

The daily lemming / not-lemming

Posted by Robin on 14 December 2018 13 Comments

This might annoy me too much to even try it, but who knows, maybe it is fantastic. The Nue Co.'s Functional Fragrance: "A fragrance with a function, designed to help you reset at times of high stress. Developed using data insight and research into the connection between cognitive function and the olfactory system. This is an anti-stress supplement delivered in the form of a unisex fragrance. Clean, woody, spicy and smoky. Green cardamom, Iris, Palo Santo + Cilantro". Need more? "Working with global fragrance house, Firmenich and legendary perfumer, Frank Voelkl, we have utilized research from the Brain & Behavior Laboratory at the University of Geneva. The research focused on mapping the neurological reactions to certain scent groups. Essentially, showing us how certain scents make you feel." They also say it works well with prebiotics and probiotics (not surprisingly, that's the bulk of their product line) and that "89% of people felt calmer, more composed and less stressed with thirty minutes of use" (doesn't Theorema already make 98% of people feel better instantly? I feel better just thinking about Theorema). 10 ml is $40, 100 ml is $155.

Jason Wu & Ralph Lauren Woman ~ perfume reviews

Posted by Robin on 11 October 2017 34 Comments

Reviews of two recent mainstream designer fragrances: Jason Wu Eau de Parfum and Ralph Lauren Woman. Do comment if you’ve tried either, or if you have tested any other recent mainstream designer fragrances that you’d like to tell us about.

Jason Wu Eau de Parfum

Jason Wu Eau de Parfum

Jason Wu’s eponymous scent is his first, and is meant to reflect the jasmine growing near his childhood home in Taiwan — a focus the designer chose after blind-smelling hundreds of raw materials with perfumer Frank Voelkl. Wu may have found his notes by trial and error, but he had a specific idea of what he wanted his fragrance to be like…
