A form of freshness which is a little different

Posted by Robin on 16 July 2009 39 Comments

Ever wonder why it costs so much to launch a new fragrance? Here's one clue: watch as Dior takes a group of journalists on a 3 day trip to Pondicherry to launch Dior Escale à Pondichéry. It's about 7 minutes long; if all you want is information on the fragrance, skip to about the 4 minute mark, when François Demachy, Director of Olfactory Development at Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy, starts to talk about the scent itself. Many thanks to Kevin for the tip!

Update: the video has been removed from YouTube, sorry!

The smell of fresh jasmine in the early morning

Posted by Robin on 14 November 2008 16 Comments

I was 16 when I started work at the Mane perfume factory in Grasse to earn pocket money. I worked as a warehouseman on Thursdays so I could go out and have fun on the weekend! After Mane, I went to work at Chiris and then at Charabot, which were also perfume distillation companies. At the time Grasse was a town awash with fragrances. In certain seasons, the streets were bathed in the scents of lavender or rose. I can still remember the smell of fresh jasmine in the early morning as I was on my way home from the nightclub where I had spent the evening. It was fantastic.

— François Demachy, Senior Vice President for Olfactive Development at Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy, talks to ShinyGloss about the early days.

Dior Homme Sport by Christian Dior ~ fragrance review

Dior Homme Sport cologne

Christian Dior's Dior Homme, judging from online fragrance websites, is a beloved cologne with high approval ratings, but Dior Homme smells ordinary (and cloying) to me. Dior Homme begat several flankers: Dior Homme Cologne, Dior Homme Intense and now, Dior Homme Sport. These Dior Homme fragrances share the same bottle style but have different scent personalities. I can’t comment on Dior Homme Cologne or Dior Homme Intense since I’ve never come across these fragrances in any U.S. shop I’ve visited. (The two fragrances are not featured on the U.S. section of the Dior website; Europeans — enjoy! And let me know what you think of Dior Homme Cologne and Dior Homme Intense.)

Dior Homme Sport will get a worldwide launch and with its release, perfumer François Demachy “was aiming for a simple structure composed around ginger“. I feel he succeeded on both counts…

Christian Dior Eau Sauvage Fraicheur Cuir, M Micallef Note Vanillee ~ new fragrances

Posted by Robin on 16 May 2007 18 Comments

Christian Dior Eau Sauvage Fraîcheur Cuir cologneChristian Dior has introduced a limited edition variation on their iconic men's fragrance Eau Sauvage. Eau Sauvage Fraîcheur Cuir is described as a spicier scent, with the original blend of lemon and hedione accented by cedar and “an amber-leather note that is ‘masculine, but not animal-like’”. The new cologne was created by perfumer Francois Demachy.

Christian Dior Eau Sauvage Fraîcheur Cuir will debut in June, and will be sold in 100 ml Eau de Toilette. (quote via osmoz, additional information via lifestyle.msn.be.com)
