To rub or not to rub

Posted by Robin on 13 August 2018 9 Comments

This gesture was done when we were extracting very high-concentration perfume, old perfume. Now it’s not really true – now we have sprays, [before] there was no spray, you took the cap off the bottle and applied it [directly]. Now it’s a spray, the dilution is much lighter, so really it doesn’t matter.

The scent is “everybody can feel at ease.” It’s a stable point where you’re not bombarded with too much information. If you’re too far away from that starting point, then you don’t get to people. You need to anchor the people to something they might think they know, and then bring to something, to somewhere they don’t know.

Feel the sourness

Posted by Robin on 22 November 2017 Leave a Comment

It’s not the cozy scent of a soul-warming hearth, Mr. Kurkdjian said, but a cold, marble fireplace after the flame has been extinguished. The soot and ash left behind is meant to help the audience “feel the sourness” of a conversation between a son and his father, whose sins this son disclosed to the entire family.

— Perfumer Francis Kurkdjian scents a movie. Read more at What’s That Smell? It’s ‘Festen,’ a Play and Film With Aroma at the New York Times.
