A Scented Palace by Elisabeth de FeydeauElisabeth de Feydeau, author of A Scented Palace, on Marie Antoinette's daily bathing habits:

Each day, she dipped in a tub laced with a confection of blanched sweet almonds, pine nuts, linseed, marshmallow root and lily bulb, then rubbed her body clean with a sachet of bran.

A Scented Palace is about Marie Antoinette’s perfumer, Jean-Louis Fargeon. You may remember that last year Francis Kurkdjian recreated Sillage de la Reine, one of the perfumes Fargeon developed for the Queen, after Feydeau discovered the recipe in the French National Archives…

Ferragamo F, Versace Bright Crystal & more new perfumes

F by Ferragamo perfumeFerragamo will launch F by Ferragamo (see bottle at right), a “floral formula created by Francis Kurkdjian“, this September.

The fragrance will replace Ferragamo Incanto, although new Incanto flankers, like Incanto Dream and Incanto Charms, will continue to launch every year. (via cosmeticnews)

Cuir Beluga, Rose Barbare & Angelique Noire: Guerlain L’Art et la Matiere

Guerlain Cuir Beluga, Rose Barbare & Angelique Noire

L’Art et la Matière is a trio of fragrances released earlier this year to coincide with the opening of Guerlain’s newly refurbished flagship boutique. The perfumes were “curated” by Sylvaine Delacourte, Guerlain’s director of fragrance development. Three noses were asked to create fragrances, or, to quote the press release, to “freely express passion for an original, precious raw material”.

Olivier Polge has taken on leather, and the result is Cuir Beluga, with notes of mandarin orange, immortelle flower, leather, amber, heliotrope and vanilla…

Gaultier2 ~ aka Gaultier to the power of 2 ~ by Jean Paul Gaultier

Jean Paul Gaultier Gaultier2 fragrance

Gaultier2 was launched this year by Jean Paul Gaultier, the French fashion designer. It is the first unisex fragrance in the Gaultier line. It was created by perfumer Francis Kurkdjian of Quest International, and features notes of ambergris, musk and vanilla.

Gaultier had said that he did not want Gaultier2 to have traditional top, middle and base notes, and in fact it is an essentially linear fragrance. The start is amber, musk and vanilla, with a blast of something fruity-floral and very sweet. That ‘something’ has been compared both to bubblegum and to Classique, Jean Paul Gaultier’s first fragrance. It has been some time since I have smelled Classique, but the bubblegum comparison is certainly apt…
