To court luxury consumers

Posted by Robin on 23 July 2024 2 Comments

Department stores are at a transition point. After years of ups and downs in retail post-Covid, these retail giants are contending with how to succeed in the new normal. Macy’s is no exception. When Tony Spring assumed the role of CEO of Macy’s, Inc. in February, he announced that Macy’s would pursue luxury as a main pillar moving forward. And fragrance, along with beauty more broadly, is a particularly useful sector to court luxury consumers at a large scale.

Exceeding expectations

Prestige fragrance sales have exceeding expectations since the start of the pandemic in 2020, Jensen said. After long stretches at home, their social and professional lives disrupted, Americans wanted to treat themselves. In some cases, that meant dropping more than $300 on a 2.4-ounce bottle of Maison Francis Kurkdjian Baccarat Rouge 540 or 3.4 ounces of Byredo Mojave Ghost perfume.

$330 apiece

Last month, Fendi dipped its toe back into the fragrance world. The Italian fashion house and LVMH property released seven fragrances created by renowned perfumers like Quentin Bisch and Anne Flipo, available exclusively at Fendi stores for $330 apiece.

A few hundred dollars is a bargain for a Fendi product — a mini Fendi baguette in the brand’s signature monogram will run you $2,390. But for a designer perfume, it’s a steep point of entry. The last time Fendi released a new fragrance — Furiosa in 2014 — it sold for just just over $100.

The store is bustling with people on a mission to design their own fragrances

The store is bustling with people on a mission to design their own fragrances. I’m here on perhaps the weirdest, and definitely most pungent, assignment I’ve ever gotten at NPR: to make a signature scent for Morning Edition and Up First.

The process at Olfactory NYC requires a lot of sniffing, and with the help of a personal scent-ologist, customers leave the store with a personalized bottle of perfume for $85.

Salon scents

Niche perfumes, or what Chinese shoppers refer to as “salon scents,” are having a moment as younger consumers look to stand out from the crowd.

Even though global players such as Chanel, Dior and Hermès still dominate the market, niche perfume brands such as Documents and To Summer have captured a new crop of shoppers who crave scents that reflect Chinese traditional culture, which is in sync with fashion trends like New Chinese style.
