BeauFort London Fathom V ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 8 February 2017 16 Comments

Sailing by Moonlight by Albert Pinkham Ryder

There’s nothing like smelling pungent, spicy, late-winter flowers in a cool and damp atmosphere. Right now, the inside of my poorly insulated house (here’s to fresh air, wool sweaters and good health!) smells of the sweet box blossoms growing outside, and my front porch has a fragrance powerhouse in bloom — Edgeworthia. Plum blossoms are starting to open along the lake road I take into work each day…talk about flower-power, visual and scent-ual. Though it’s officially still winter, I’m smelling “green” all around me.

My first experience with the BeauFort London Come Hell or High Water collection was not a success, but by chance, Fathom V (another member of the Come Hell or High Water quintet) found me, and I’m glad it did — it’s a perfect cologne for the chilled, wet and perfumed springs we enjoy in Seattle…

Arquiste El ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 28 September 2016 24 Comments

Arquiste Él brand image

Arquiste Él’s1 backstory is based in 1970’s Acapulco, at Armando’s Le Club:

Nighttime at Acapulco’s sultriest disco. Revelry on the dance floor. In the heat of the moment, he smiles coyly and motions to the beach outside, hinting at a midnight swim. He unbuttons his shirt, flashing bronzed skin and the scent of his cologne, a virile muskiness loaded with patchouli, oak moss and elegant woody notes. A masculine impression of a day under the sun, intensified by the thrill of the night.

If a guy started undressing in a club after motioning to the beach…it would give me pause…

Versace Pour Homme Dylan Blue ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 31 August 2016 20 Comments

Versace Pour Homme Dylan Blue advert

Versace just released Versace Pour Homme Dylan Blue and Donatella Versace had this to say about it:

I have always believed men should be strong, passionate, proud, expressive, unafraid. I love that in today’s world, men feel able to reveal their true natures, to share their passions and their beliefs. It’s there in the fragrance, which is strong, fresh, seductive.1

Donatella grew up in ITALY. Italian men, including those in diapers and strollers, don’t exactly have a reputation for hiding their true natures, passions or beliefs. Who put these dumb words into Versace’s mouth? She grew up surrounded by brothers! Robin Here at NST™ had another take on Donatella, using Versace’s quote “I love how Dylan Blue captures such an evocative world of Versace masculinity.” Robin: Then, I picture her closing the door of her room, laughing, and counting her money.

I don’t know Ms. Versace personally (she seems nice enough in interviews), so I don’t relish her successes…or gloat over her failures…

L’Homme Prada ~ fragrance review, plus a quick poll

Posted by Robin on 26 August 2016 53 Comments

Ansel Elgort and Dane DeHaan for L'Homme Prada

L’Homme Prada is a fragrance of pairs, of doubles, of juxtapositions and layers. The classic codes of the male Fougère are all present in Neroli, Geranium and Patchouli. Yet the interchangeable male/female Prada signatures are present, too, in the shape of Iris and Amber, the principal elements. It is a mix that is both airy and yet purposefully, highly sensual.1

So, I didn’t hate La Femme Prada, but I didn’t exactly adore it either. I get another chance with L’Homme Prada, also from perfumer Daniela Andrier, and hey, take a look at the brand’s description above. Doesn’t that sound an awful lot like Prada Amber Pour Homme, maybe with a smidgen of Prada Infusion d’Iris (or Infusion d’Homme) thrown in for good measure? Such a thing would suit me fine: I liked Amber Pour Homme,2 and so did an awful lot of other women…

Boy Chanel ~ fragrance review & a quick Chanel poll

Posted by Robin on 7 June 2016 116 Comments

Arthur Capel

Boy Chanel joins the Les Exclusifs collection at Chanel this year, bringing the collection to 16.1 It’s the second Exclusif from house perfumer Olivier Polge (the first being Misia), and was inspired by Arthur “Boy” Capel. Boy Capel, an English polo player and businessman, would likely be forgotten today but for his 9-year affair with Coco Chanel — he is often cited as the true love of her life.1 That, of course, lends him massive potential as “another link in the grand construct of the Chanel story”.2 I don’t know exactly how many products he has accrued at this point, but his namesake lipstick (in the Rouge Coco Shine line) came out in 2011, and his namesake handbag, Le Boy Chanel, debuted in 2012 (and was called an “instant classic”). Now, he has a fragrance.

It’s a unisex, with the usual hedging about unisex…
