Hermes H24 ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 15 March 2021 18 Comments

I’ve been working from home over a year now, hiding from COVID-19. During that time, several bottles of perfume have joined the family but not one stitch of new clothing has taken up residence in my closets or dresser drawers. (I’ve not even had the chance to wear clothes I bought in anticipation of last summer.) When I saw the Hermès H24 fragrance ads, my eyes did not land on the H24 bottle but strayed to the H24 model’s jacket and shirts, in those beautiful, soft, calming colors of stone, sky and clouds. The clothes interested me more than another bottle of perfume, especially one in such a sporty, Lacoste-type bottle.

The transition at Hermès from house perfumer Jean-Claude Ellena to Christine Nagel has been a bumpy one for me. Since Nagel’s arrival and the debut of her perfumes, I’ve not bought one new Hermès fragrance…

Diptyque Eau de Minthe ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 24 April 2019 29 Comments

If I’d been presented with Diptyque’s new Eau de Minthé* in an unmarked vial, after the first sniff I’d have bet it was a vintage fougère perfume from the 1960s or 1970s. Eau de Minthé is hairy from eyebrows to toes, and brimming with testosterone.

Eau de Minthé goes on with a blast of bergamot mixing with peppery greens (geranium leaf is noticeable, too). As Eau de Minthé skids into mid-development I get scented hints of rose water, green tea(?), “chewing-gum” spearmint and Life Savers® wintergreen candy…

A brand new modern universe

I wanted to create a neo-vintage fougère. A traditional fougère spirit translated into a brand new modern universe. Instead of using aniseed aromatic notes, I had the idea to work around a top quality of mint: our Mint Cascade launched thanks to our US partner ESSEX. It is a luminous mint, as if frozen, and with hints of fresh pepper. I used it to renew this iconic olfactive family.

Friday scent of the day 11/3

old spice

Happy Fougère Friday! Our community project for today: wear a fougère, if you have one.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

Me: I decided to go old school, so I’m in vintage Old Spice. (Actually, I think it smells more like an oriental, but Classification des Parfums et Terminologie says it is a spicy fougère so that’s good enough for me…)

Mirus The Elysian Fields ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 1 November 2017 7 Comments

lavender

I assume Mirus The Elysian Fields1 is named after Elysium, not The Elysian Fields in Hoboken, New Jersey. But whether you’re a fan of happy (dead) Greek (im)mortals or baseball legend, this perfume offers some afterlife/outdoorsy sweetness.

Like many flowers (tuberose, peony, freesia, carnation, ylang-ylang), I prefer lavender in my garden, not on my person. But there are always exceptions, right? I was immediately pleased by The Elysian Fields, and it contains a good dose of lavender…
