Etat Libre d’Orange Tom of Finland ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 4 June 2008 24 Comments

Tom of Finland drawing

According to État Libre d’Orange and the Tom of Finland Foundation, Touko Laaksonen (a.k.a. Tom of Finland) “was one of the most influential artists of the last century” and before he began creating his beefcake illustrations in the 1950s, gay men went around lisping and limp-wristed, dressed in chiffon or dandy garb or they huddled — scared, bony and uptight — in dark corners, nervously adjusting their ties, cardigans and horn-rimmed specs. In other words, gay life, pre-Tom of Finland, was full of flamers and nerds. Perhaps Tom of Finland’s aesthetic influenced the world of fashion (and ‘gym culture’) for some gay men who hopped onto his brawny bandwagon and dressed in tight jeans and t-shirts, leather boots and jackets…

Etat Libre d’Orange Delicious Closet Queen ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 24 September 2007 30 Comments

Etat Libre d'Orange Delicious Closet Queen perfume

There have been some closet queens in the news recently, especially in the political arena, but none of them are “delicious.” I wonder — CAN a closet queen be delicious? Does Etat Libre d’Orange know what “closet queen” means? A “closet queen” is a gay man who pretends he’s not gay — he hides his homosexuality from everyone; he is repressed. Etat Libre d’Orange tries to make a closet queen seem romantic, mysterious and exciting. While most real-life closet queens are furtive and ashamed, Etat Libre d’Orange’s closet queen thinks “elegance is an armor” and he “excels in the art of concealing” (à la James Bond). Etat Libre d’Orange’s closet queen is “a master of pretence”, “a…seducer who never yields to anyone.” We are encouraged to believe we have something in common with the delicious closet queen: “we all have a secret side…an inner garden we cultivate to protect our most abiding passions.”

Sorry, just as I have a hard time relating to a closet queen in person I have a hard time relating to Delicious Closet Queen on my person…

Perfume in the news: Luca Turin & Sarah Jessica Parker

Posted by Robin on 9 August 2007 6 Comments

When I first came across Etat Libre D’Orange, I assumed on the basis of past experience that this niche perfumery firm had all the hallmarks of the classic snob-value ripoff: great names and high concept, crap fragrances. But I’m co-authoring a perfume guide, so I gave them a try.

— Luca Turin tries (and likes!) the Etat Libre d'Orange line. Read the rest at NZZ Folio.

Not to sound treacly, but it would be how my son's bedroom smells when you walk in.

(The scent is) clean, and it's mixed with their sweat while they're sleeping and the cotton of their blankets and the moisture that's right underneath their hair.

— Sarah Jessica Parker on "the most comforting smell she would want to bottle and carry around with her", via USA Today.
