D.S. & Durga 1538 Rheims, Smoked Amber, East MidEast and Royal Purpure ~ fragrance reviews

Posted by Kevin on 21 October 2009 55 Comments

Brooklyn-based perfumers D.S. & Durga were hired to create four new fragrances for Anthropologie. People who like their fragrances light, bright and “modern” may find these perfumes too heavy and “retro,” but I have a taste for ‘liquor-y’, natural-smelling, artisanal fragrances of this type. I was pleasantly surprised that Anthropologie chose perfumes that match the vintage/quirky style of its clothes, furniture and house wares.

1538 Rheims

(iris, ginger lily, patchouli, musk)

Judging from the reactions here at Now Smell This, patchouli is a love-it-or-hate-it perfume oil, so let me start by saying 1538 Rheims is basically an invigorating patchouli fragrance. 1538 Rheims presents resinous, dense patchouli — not modern, cleaned-up, re-configured patchouli…

DS & Durga East Mid East perfumeBrooklyn-based indie line D.S. & Durga will launch four new fragrances for women at Anthropologie in October:

East Mid East (shown) ~ “The crossroads of Asia lies upon the olden routes of the silk road. Markets teem with a beguiling array of smells—saffron, Indian cardamom, Russian roses, & red mandarins. Heady, deep, & exotic…”

Parfums MDCI Un Coeur en Mai, DS & Durga Resin ~ new fragrances

Posted by Robin on 18 April 2009 42 Comments

Parfums MDCI Un Coeur en Mai perfume

Parfums MDCI has launched Un Coeur en Mai. Like their recently introduced Le Rivage des Syrtes, Un Coeur en Mai was developed by perfumer Patricia de Nicolaï of Parfums de Nicolaï.

The other route taken by Patricia de Nicolaï opens up for us a different imaginary world; this is a green floral which instantly evokes a fresh spring day, a walk through woods perfumed with hyacinths and lily-of-the-valley…

D.S. & Durga Cowboy Grass, Marblehead Reds, Barbados, $, Vetyver & Juniper ~ fragrance reviews

Posted by Kevin on 16 April 2009 34 Comments

DS & Durga Cowboy Grass fragrance

New York-based D.S. & Durga has released a large number of fragrances in a very short time; there are two feminine and two masculine perfume collections — 18 perfumes total. I finally got up the energy (and set aside a week) to wear six perfumes from the men’s lines, and I was pleasantly surprised at the quality and variety of the perfumes.

Cowboy Grass

(vetiver, sage, white thyme)

Judging from the name, Cowboy Grass, I was expecting something a bit “tougher” and wilder. If there were any ‘cowboys’ in the minds of Cowboy Grass’s perfumers, those boys live on a fancy rancho, not on the open range, and they are fresh out of sudsy tubs — scrubbed, shaved, and scented — their jeans, shirts and bandanas ironed to perfection. Cowboy Grass begins with a ‘dusty’ accord that brings to mind New Mexico — my desert area of choice; there’s a hint of incense, a touch of sage-herbs-vetiver. If you’ve ever been in the desert and rubbed sage between your fingers or smelled creosote or burned small bundles of sage smudge sticks, you can perhaps conjure the aroma of Cowboy Grass, but its overall effect in person will be smoother, cleaner and sweeter…

D.S. & Durga ~ new perfume line

Posted by Robin on 9 January 2009 28 Comments

DS & Durga fragrances

D.S. & Durga is a new Brooklyn-based indie perfume line that debuted last year:

D.S. & Durga began humbly in December of 2007 when they decided to make holiday gifts for their friends. D.S., a musician, & Durga, an architect, first experimented with tinctures of flowers, herbs, & seeds to make aftershaves & toners. When they realized that none of their friends shaved, they decided to begin blending oils, resins, & plant extracts. The results were small batch handmade colognes & perfumes. Their friends loved the results, so they decided to make it official. Within months they were selling to boutiques in New York & California…
