The scent of Einstein’s jacket

Posted by Robin on 1 March 2018 4 Comments

In step with LVC’s dedication to authenticity, and with the help of Brooklyn-based perfume house D.S. & Durga, they also recreated the scent of Einstein’s jacket: a warm blend of burley pipe tobacco, papyrus manuscripts and vintage leather. A bottle of this exclusive scent accompanies each jacket, along with a replica of the No. 97 auction paddle that was used to bid on this historic garment.

— For $1200, you can buy a replica of the Menlo Cossack leather jacket that Albert Einstein bought from Levis in the 1930s, and that the company bought back, at auction, a couple years ago. It comes with a bottle of the fragrance. Read more at AS WORN BY ALBERT EINSTEIN… LEVI’S® VINTAGE CLOTHING REPRODUCES ICONIC JACKET at Levi Strauss. During this week of scorching temperatures, I decided to wear two new “garden” fragrances, one based on citrus, the other on silphium (a mystery plant).

Let’s start with citrus, “Italian” citrus. DS & Durga Italian Citrus presents a citrus-lover’s dream list of notes…

A real-life scratch-and-sniff game

Posted by Robin on 8 April 2017 2 Comments

Following Moltz in the wild is to step into a real-life scratch-and-sniff game. At stone-built Skara Brae, a cluster of eight Neolithic houses older than both Stonehenge and the Great Pyramids, he kneels in the grass above the settlements, and rubs the soil between his fingertips, smelling. Outside of the replica of house seven, he finds wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens). Down on the beach, behind the site, he walks the curving shore of the Bay of Skaill, plucking, photographing, surveying, identifying, illustrating, and recording it all in a black notebook otherwise tucked under his right arm.

Reviews of two recent florals: Durga by DS & Durga and Don’t Tell Jasmine by Vilhelm Parfumerie.

Durga by DS & Durga

If you asked me what notes I’d like you to add to “palatial doses of the finest floral absolutes”, melon and chrysanthemum would not be high on my list of suggestions…
