Diptyque Do Son ~ perfume review

Posted by Robin on 7 November 2005 36 Comments

TuberoseTuberose

Do Son was released by Diptyque this year, and is their first new fragrance for women since 2003’s Jardin Clos. Like Tam Dao, it was inspired by the childhood memories of Yves Coueslant, one of Diptyque’s founders, who…

…grew up in Haiphong, a vast harbour in northern Indochina where his father, a lawyer in love with China, was established. His mother, hardly bearing the heat and damp monsoon weather, used to rest for hours in the fresh and quiet half-light of her sitting room. She loved the bitter sweet fragrance of tuberoses and the great department store in town where she used to buy whatever was fashionable from Paris. (via Diptyque website)

The fragrance notes are tuberose, orange tree leaves, rose, benzoin, iris, and white musk…

Home fragrance: Diptyque Room Spray in Coing (Quince)

Posted by Victoria on 8 September 2005 11 Comments

My olfactory gallery of autumnal scents cannot be imagined without quince. According to a Georgian tale, quince took all summer to decide whether it was a pear or an apple, when suddenly the chills of autumn arrived, and there it was—neither pear nor apple, neither sweet nor pretty. Yet, the scent of this fruit is unlike any other—sweet, with a honeyed undercurrent, as well as fresh with a spicy exotic note. The fragrance of quince would pervade my house when I was growing up, as my mother made her quince preserves, boiling hard pieces of fruit in sugar syrup till they released their unique fragrance and turned into rose coloured jewels. The aroma would rise up like a breeze from the exotic gardens of a faraway land…

Perfume review: Oyedo by Diptyque

Posted by Robin on 26 July 2005 28 Comments

Diptyque Oyedo fragrance

Diptyque named Oyédo for the ancient capital of Japan, Yedo (the modern spelling is Edo), now known as Tokyo. It was released in 2000 and has notes of yuzu, grapefruit, lime, orange, mint, thyme, and woods.

It starts with strong, fizzy citrus, and smells very much like the concoction they used to serve at children’s parties that was made by pouring 7-Up over orange sherbet…

Diptyque Tam Dao fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 17 March 2005 29 Comments

Diptyque Tam Dao perfume label

Diptyque launched Tam Dao in 2003, and I assume the fragrance was named for the Vietnamese hill station north of Hanoi. Tam Dao was established as a resort town during French colonial rule; the town is now inside of Tam Dao National Park and is a popular weekend tourist destination. Diptyque’s Tam Dao fragrance was created by perfumer Daniel Moliere, and the notes include rosewood, cypress, ambergris, and sandalwood.

Like many sandalwood-heavy fragrances, Tam Dao gets off to a bit of a rocky start. The top notes smell like a burst of cedar with an unpleasant, almost acrid undertone which I can’t quite pin down. It is close to gasoline, but not quite. It settles quickly to a creamy sandalwood with a distinctly resinous edge. The cypress lends an aromatic, slightly evergreen bite in the early stages, but it is still a very soft fragrance, with little to temper the dry woods…
