Diptyque Eau de Lierre fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 2 May 2006 24 Comments

Ivy

Diptyque’s Eau de Lierre, conceived as an homage to the ivy growing around the country homes of the line’s founders, launches this week. The fragrance features fresh notes, pepper, ivy, water notes, musk and wood.

Eau de Lierre starts with ivy, heavily peppered. It is green and slightly bitter, but nothing like the explosion of green that opens L’Ombre dans L’Eau: this is considerably lighter and airier, and much less astringent. Although I prefer the more concentrated approach of L’Ombre, the Lierre is probably the more wearable of the two fragrances, at least in the early stages, and I rather liked the breezy quality of the top notes…

Fragrance review: Diptyque L’Ombre dans L’Eau

Posted by Robin on 15 March 2006 31 Comments

Diptyque L'Ombre dans L'Eau perfume

L’Ombre dans L’Eau was launched by Diptyque in 1983. The notes are listed as black currant leaf and Bulgarian rose; Diptyque describes the fragrance as “the scent of a green riverside garden.” It was created by Serge Kalouguine, who was also the perfumer for Diptyque Olène.

L’Ombre dans L’Eau, like yesterday’s Ecume de Rose, gets off to a somewhat rocky start, with an overwhelming burst of green (and I love green notes, mind you). It is harsh, maybe even astringent. The green remains — if you don’t like green, there is little point in even trying it — but it does calm. There are crushed green leaves. There is the bitter smell of broken stems. There is a light sprinkling of fresh herbs, and one or two pine needles. There is the smell of freshly overturned soil warming in the sun, and a bit of tartness from the black currant…

Fragrance of the day: Diptyque Olene

Posted by Robin on 4 January 2006 20 Comments

Diptyque Olene perfume

Since Frederic Malle’s Carnal Flower turned out to be so quiet and well behaved for a white floral, I thought I’d try a little shock therapy today. I’m wearing Olène by Diptyque, created by perfumer Serge Kalouguine and released in 1988. The notes are listed, not very helpfully, as wisteria and narcissus.

Olène is probably the sort of fragrance that creates a white-floral-hater. The first 15 minutes are heady, to put it lightly: an explosion of honeysuckle, and not just any old honeysuckle, but a very sweet honeysuckle. On steroids. That calms gradually — you won’t want to spray this on and walk right into an elevator full of innocent bystanders — into a lush blend of florals, with the wisteria and narcissus as promised, along with quite a bit of jasmine and a light musky base…

Home fragrance report: Diptyque Lilas candle & room spray

Posted by Victoria on 23 November 2005 33 Comments

Diptyque Lilas candle

One of my quests has always been a lilac-focused fragrance that would not only capture the opulent indolic sweetness of lilac, but also display its dewy freshness. A related wish was to find a candle that would allow me to recreate the evenings spent walking through my grandmother’s garden. Overgrown with ancient lilac bushes, it would be filled with the lush intoxicating aroma emanating from the blossom studded boughs. Yet, while Frederic Malle En Passant, Jean Patou Vacances and Kenzo Summer have managed to satisfy my lilac cravings, I have been less fortunate in the home fragrance domain. Most lilac scented candles and room sprays are too similar to Glade Lilac Grove to be satisfying.

However, Diptyque Lilas is the best lilac scented candle I have discovered thus far…
