Top 10 Spring Fragrances 2013

Posted by Jessica on 5 April 2013 84 Comments

Springtime Landscape, Béla Iványi-Grünwald

I can’t believe it’s been five years since my last Top Ten Spring Fragrances list, but yes, a look back confirms that fact. My tastes haven’t shifted much since then, yet I can somehow come up with plenty of new favorites. Of course, there are the fragrances that I consider part of my springtime “hall of fame”: Guerlain Apres l’Ondée and Chamade, Frederic Malle En Passant. These come into rotation every March or April, come rain or come shine (and lately, it’s been mostly rain). But, beyond these classics, I’m easily able to compile a list of other fragrances I’ve been wearing or will be wearing over the next month or two.

What to wear when the calendar says Spring, but the weather is still chilly and damp and dreary? I love to don Frederic Malle L’Eau d’Hiver during that indecisive kind of weather, perhaps because it walks a fine line between warm and cool, soft and crisp…

Diptyque L’Eau du Trente-Quatre ~ fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 26 March 2013 12 Comments

Diptyque L'Eau du Trente-Quatre

L’Eau du Trente-Quatre is the latest from French niche line Diptyque, and is meant as the second chapter to (or the springtime variation on) the story started with 2011’s 34 Boulevard Saint Germain. If you remember, that one was meant to capture the essence of Diptyque’s flagship store in Paris, hence the street address; both “chapters” were developed by perfumer Olivier Pescheux.

I liked 34 Boulevard Saint Germain, but like Kevin, not so much that I was tempted to add it to my buy list. L’Eau du Trente-Quatre won’t make the list either, but I do like it a little better…

Bunch o’ limited edition collector bottles 2013, part 1

Posted by Robin on 11 January 2013 10 Comments

More limited edition collector fragrance bottles, with the usual disclaimers: in most of these cases, the juice is unchanged, just the bottle is “special” (or not, as the case may be), and some of these may not be available in the US.

Lanvin Arpege minaudière

From Lanvin, a minaudière celebrating the 85th anniversary of their classic Arpège perfume. Made in Italy of resin molded in the shape of the Arpège bottle, with gold-tone hardware, chain handle and push-button closure. Available for pre-order at Bergdorf Goodman (expected to ship in April) for $3610…

25 Rose Fragrances Every Perfumista Should Try

Posted by Jessica on 21 December 2012 171 Comments

aged roses

A few weeks ago, Robin posted an update to her much-loved post 100 Fragrances Every Perfumista Should Try, adding twenty-five more fragrances worth seeking out. Angela has pitched in with a tempting selection of 25 Vintage Fragrances Every Perfumista Should Try, while Kevin has expanded our view with a list of 50 Masculine Fragrances. And what’s my “beat” here on Now Smell This? I’ve always gravitated towards florals, particularly rose-based perfumes, so I’ll do my part with a run-down of some must-try rose scents.

True roses1

1. Annick Goutal Rose Absolue

Annick Goutal was one of my “gateway” houses into perfume obsession, partially because it offers several rose-inspired fragrances. Rose Absolue is the most “true” rose of the group. It brings together essences of six different roses (May, Turkish, Bulgarian, Damascus, Egyptian, and Moroccan) into a radiant bouquet…
