Scented advent calendars 2017, part 1

Posted by Robin on 13 October 2017 9 Comments

With the usual apologies for holiday creep, I’m starting our yearly roundup of advent calendars now, since they tend to launch early and then sell out quickly. If you want one, buy it soon. Part 2 will be coming up later this month. (Please note that some of these calendars are not available in the US. Advent calendars are more popular in the UK than in the US).

Diptyque’s 2017 Advent is out at Selfridges: “Make this year’s countdown to Christmas the most special yet with the anticipated Advent Calendar from Diptyque. Housing 25 little treasures to discover before the big day, it brings together the label’s beloved products in a unique discovery format. Look forward to a selection of cute miniatures including 10ml Vinaigre de Toilette, deluxe 15ml skin and body care, mini-candles in 35g format and a 70g candle make every day a celebration.” £300. (Most years, this ends up in the US as well but sells out fast…)

Diptyque Scented sticks

Do I want these? I have no idea. Diptyque's Scented Sticks in benjoin: "Inspired by an unprecedented technology, this surprising object offers a new way to perfume your home by trapping the fragrance concentrate in a sheet of paper. Several scented sheets are then rolled together to form a stick with a persistent sillage. The paper stem can be used on its own. A bouquet of them can also be placed together in a vase. Sold with three small paper cones, the perfumed stems of the Benjoin scent evoke creativity. The cones and stems can be arranged at different angles to create your own unique sculpture. It is a lightweight, surprising object that offers new ways to diffuse a scent in your home." $78.

Shown is the Miami candle (other options include Shanghai, London, Beverly Hills, Tokyo and Berlin) : "The scent of the Miami candle offers an exotic aroma of delicate magnolia blossoms enhanced by delicious citrus notes. Reminiscent of the tangy lemon and lime native to the city, the candle suggests hints of vanilla while xx [sic] to the tropical atmosphere. Its design pays homage to the city’s iconic Art Deco architecture, lively atmosphere and unique culture." $70 at Diptyque.

Diptyque L’Autre ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 20 September 2017 14 Comments

“Capturing the memory of long walks through the spice markets of Damascus, L’Autre is a dry, sensual blend that recreates all the mesmerizing magic found in the rich landscape of the Orient,” says Diptyque of its second perfume, released in 1973.

I associate the name L’Autre* (The Other) — given the supposed fragrance inspiration — as representing separateness: a tourist surrounded by new sights and sounds and smells and regarding himself or those around him as The Other. “Autre” in my French dictionary takes up half a page, so interpretations may vary! Certainly given L’Autre’s bold nature, many smelling it, including perfume lovers, may recoil and feel L’Autre is The Other…

Bunch o’ limited edition collector bottles (& some other stuff) 2017, part 13

Posted by Robin on 10 September 2017 2 Comments

More limited edition collector fragrance bottles, with the usual disclaimers: in most of these cases, the juice is unchanged, just the bottle is “special” (or not, as the case may be), and some of these may not be available in the US. Today’s post includes special edition bottles from Giorgio Armani, Carven and Robert Piguet, plus new concentrations of Diptyque Vetyverio, Dolce and Gabbana The One and L’Envol de Cartier.

Giorgio Armani Sì Nacré Edition

From Giorgio Armani, Sì in the Nacré Edition, with the Sì manifesto written on the bottle and box. Leaves a shimmering finish on the skin. In 50 Eau de Parfum at Printemps…
