He Says/She Says: Le Labo Neroli 36

Posted by Robin on 16 August 2006 13 Comments

Le Labo Neroli 36

Today Marlen and I are discussing Neroli 36, one of the 10 fragrances launched by Le Labo this year. The unisex fragrance was created by nose Daphne Bugey, and features neroli, mandarin orange, rose, jasmine, calone, musk, tonka bean and vanilla.

He says: Being a fan of all things neroli/orange blossom, I consider myself a pretty harsh critic. But I gotta say — Le Labo Neroli is…wow! Floral and somewhat powdery, with undercurrents of marine notes, Neroli’s mélange of rose, jasmine, musk, vanilla, mandarin and neroli is a breath of fresh air, grander than the typical eau de cologne and more complex than a mere single note floral. I’ve read of comparisons to Frederic Malle’s En Passant, and I’d have to agree, though the doughy iris notes and powdery lilac have been replaced with vanilla and a jasmine/rose pairing…

Le Labo Bergamote 22 ~ fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 2 April 2006 4 Comments

bergamotbergamot

Like yesterday’s Rose 31, Bergamote 22 was created by perfumer Daphne Bugey for the Le Labo line, which recently launched in New York City. The fragrance features bergamot, petitgrain, grapefruit, nutmeg, orange blossom, aspic, cedar, amber, musk and vetiver.

Bergamote 22 starts with a rush of dry spices not unlike the opening of Rose 31, but with lighter notes of citrus and orange blossom replacing the rose and deep woods in the Rose 31…

Le Labo Rose 31 ~ fragrance review

Le Labo Rose 31 fragrance

Le Labo is a relatively new niche perfumery in New York City. Last week I posted some background on Le Labo along with a list of their fragrances, and today I am wearing one of the offerings for men, Rose 31, by perfumer Daphne Bugey. The fragrance notes are Grasse rose, cumin, pepper, clove, nutmeg, olibanum, cedar, amber, gaïac wood, oudh wood, cistus, vetiver and animalic notes.

Rose 31 is one of my early favorites of the Le Labo line. The list of notes include cumin, so I was fully prepared to hate it (and for that matter, I was prepared to remove it quickly if necessary); instead, I was charmed. It starts with light citrus and strong, dusty spices, and for anyone who is as cumin-phobic as I am, I will say that the cumin is quite noticeable, but the effect is buffered by the other spices — I guessed coriander and maybe cardamom, but as you can see from the notes above I was quite off…
