Rare but stinky

Posted by Robin on 16 June 2010 10 Comments

Prepare to hold your nose - Bella's about to bloom again.

And if you don't like the whiff of rotting flesh, keep a good distance from UNC Charlotte's greenhouse on the morning that its rare but stinky titan arum, nicknamed "the corpse plant," first opens in full, spectacular bloom.

— Yet another corpse flower is about to bloom, this one at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Read more at What's all the stink about? at the Charlotte Observer, or track the bloom's progress (right now they say it's due between 6/24 and 7/1) at the UNC Botanical Gardens website.

Powerful roadkill aroma

Its huge inflorescence...and powerful roadkill aroma attracted several hundred flies and three thousand visitors.

It is now producing its second inflorescence and is expected to bloom sometime between June 8-12. Because of its unpredictable nature, the exact date can't be known in advance. And when it blooms, it will happen fast (within hours) and only last one night!

— Another corpse flower is set to bloom, this one at Eastern Illinois University's Thut Greenhouse. They've got a blog and a webcam and a Twitter stream following its progress.

Getting ready to make a big stink

Now, another of the famous Corpse Flower’s offspring is getting ready to make its debut. Because nature is unpredictable, the exact date when the Corpse Flower will bloom can’t be known in advance. Experts estimate that it will occur sometime between June 5-10.

— Another titan arum is due to bloom, this time at the Huntington Botanical Gardens in Southern California. It's the fourth flowering of a titan arum at the Huntington (prior blooms were in 1999, 2002 & 2009). They're posting daily pictures of its progress here.

An unforgettable odor

Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is anxiously awaiting the extremely rare blooming of its 16-year-old titan arum plant, which is one of the largest flowering plants in the world. The blooming, which lasts only about 24 hours, is expected to occur within the next seven days.

In full bloom, the titan arum will stand taller than most people, and it will emit an unforgettable odor that some have likened to rotting meat. Thus, its alternate name: Corpse Flower.
