Grace by Grace Coddington ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 12 May 2016 58 Comments

Grace Coddington drawing

Way back in 2009, my friend A. and I went to see “The September Issue,” a documentary film about Vogue magazine and its influential (and infamous) editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour. If you’d grabbed me on the way out of the theater and asked me to review the film in one line, I’d have said, “Go for Anna, but stay for Grace.” Grace Coddington, creative director of Vogue, was the movie’s surprise star — she impressed us with her imagination and her commitment to her work and she reminded us why we’re bewitched and inspired by fashion despite ourselves.

Coddington (now Vogue’s Creative Director at Large) has just collaborated with Comme des Garçons on a fragrance called Grace by Grace Coddington. This scent was inspired by Coddington’s “love of English roses”…

That inimitable Comme des Garcons edge

Posted by Robin on 20 April 2016 Leave a Comment

...the challenge lay in creating a rosy, floral scent that was light but also possessed that inimitable Comme des Garçons edge.

'The idea is to build something and then to break it – that's always the surprise. In this scent, what we created was the rose and to break it, there is mint and notes of basil. It became something more contemporary,' says Astuguevieille. 'Grace wanted a tiny rose – a rose at the beginning of its budding. One that's very personal and not for everybody. The process was quite easy because she really knew what she wanted.'

— Christian Astuguevieille of Comme des Garçons talks about the new Grace by Grace Coddington. Read more at Coming up roses: Comme des Garçons creates Grace Coddington perfume at Wallpaper.

Maybe I’ll cash in

“My immediate thought was something like, ‘But I’m not J. Lo, so how’s it going to work?’” she said of the idea to do a perfume at all, which was proposed by a friend and former co-worker. “I’m not really a celebrity person, but just by chance, my name is known a little bit, which I keep trying to deny, but it is. Then I think, well, if it is, maybe I’ll cash in.”

Comme des Garcons Dot ~ fragrance review & a quick Comme des Garcons poll

Posted by Robin on 16 March 2016 67 Comments

Comme des Garçons Dot circle

Dot is the latest fragrance release from Comme des Garçons. It comes in the melted light bulb bottle,1 which I did not like in clear glass, but which looks great fun in opaque black with polka dots (see below). Also in its favor, in my book at least, it’s supposed to be about osmanthus, one of my (yes, many) favorite floral notes: “The aim was not only to capture the smell of the flower but to reproduce the mysterious allure that penetrates the air of a park filled with Osmantus trees in bloom.”2

Throw in a few berries, and Dot pretty much follows its lists of notes…
