Clarins Eau des Jardins ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 6 August 2010 46 Comments

Red currantClarins Eau des Jardins

For years, I thought of Clarins strictly as a higher-end French cosmetics company; then, a friend shared a few gift-with-purchase items with me, and I had the chance to try the brand’s “Relax” shower gel and body lotion. I’ve been interested in Clarins’ fragranced products ever since then, so I looked forward to trying Eau des Jardins when it was launched in May. Eau des Jardins is recommended as an aromatherapeutic product, created with “more than 10 essential oils and three bud extracts (beech, blackcurrant and sorbier)”; the plant-bud extracts are also reportedly beneficial to the skin.

More specifically, the notes of this “treatment fragrance” are listed as an opening of grapefruit, citrus, bergamot and orange; a heart of mint, laurel leaves, rose and blackcurrant bud absolute; and base notes of cedar wood, patchouli, vetiver, white musk. Eau des Jardins’ bottle is visually appealing, with shades of ruby and chartreuse that complement the fragrance well: it’s a blend of tart red fruits and crisp green leaves…

More limited edition collector fragrance bottles, with the usual disclaimers: in most of these cases, the juice is unchanged, just the bottle is “special” (or not, as the case may be), and some of these may not be available in the US.

Clarins “Relax” Bath & Shower Concentrate and Body Balm ~ scented body products

Posted by Jessica on 30 December 2007 8 Comments

Clarins Relax seriesIn the calm after the holiday storm of shopping, socializing, travel, and various overindulgences, a few of us might be looking for simple means of relaxation. This is an ideal time to try the “Relax” products from Clarins, which happens to produce some very fine aromatherapy products alongside its skincare and makeup lines.

The “Relax” Bath & Shower Concentrate, which I’ve been using as a shower gel, is a low-lathering liquid fragranced with essential oils of geranium, basil and petitgrain. The accompanying Body Balm is a creamy lotion, just thick enough to feel indulgent but light enough to be easily absorbed into the skin; its aromatherapeutic essences are the same as those of the Bath & Shower Concentrate, with an additional note of chamomile.

The “Relax” scent is designed to enhance a sense of tranquility…

Thierry Mugler Angel a drug?, part 3

Posted by Robin on 10 December 2007 6 Comments

The background: The National Toxic Encephalopathy Foundation (NTEF) has been campaigning (in the courts and in the media) against Clarins' Thierry Mugler Angel perfume. NTEF says Angel contains coumarin, and that coumarin is a "dangerous ingredient". See Thierry Mugler Angel a drug? and Thierry Mugler Angel a drug?, part 2.

Many of us wondered why they were picking on Angel, which is not the only perfume with coumarin. The answer, from a Clarins spokesman:

He said NTEF president Angel De Fazio had filed a lawsuit against Clarins in October 2004 claiming that one spray of the company's Angel Parfum had left her permanently disabled.

That lawsuit was dismissed earlier this year. Read more at Clarins defends itself against interest group attacks in Cosmetics Design.
