Atelier Cologne Cedrat Enivrant ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 19 February 2014 30 Comments

Atelier Cologne Cédrat Enivrant

I’ve fallen behind in my sampling of the Atelier Cologne line. I tried all the original releases (and I liked Trèfle Pur enough to put it on my to-buy list — where it’s languished for years). Just-launched Cédrat Enivrant* is the first brand-new Atelier Cologne fragrance I’ve tried since Vanille Insensée three years ago.

The Atelier colognes I’ve worn remind me of Jo Malone perfumes: well-blended, non-threatening, mostly “dressy-casual” in style. These type scents smell “good” but rarely inspire me to purchase them. Cédrat Enivrant fits in this category.

Cédrat Enivrant (“intoxicating citron”) goes on smelling sharp, robust and natural…

Cartier Eau de Cartier Zeste de Soleil, with an aside on Baiser Vole Essence de Parfum ~ fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 14 January 2014 30 Comments

Cartier Eau de Cartier Zeste de Soleil

Hey, who doesn’t need a little zeste de soleil right about now? (If it’s warm where you are, no bragging please!) Zeste de Soleil is the latest flanker to Cartier’s Eau de Cartier, a fragrance I’ve always liked but never adored quite enough to buy a bottle. It joins Eau de Cartier Essence d’Orange (which was not as wonderful as I hoped), Eau de Cartier Essence de Bois (a great pencil-shavings scent darkened with a drop of oud) and Eau de Cartier Goutte de Rose (which I have not smelled — do comment if you have).

Zeste de Soleil is apparently meant to be the exotic-slash-tropical entry in the series; it adds passion fruit to the original mix of yuzu and mint. The top notes are the perfect antidote to the grey, dreary, rainy weather we’re having here lately: an energetic burst of what smells like flash-frozen grapefruit peel…

Le Labo Limette 37 ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 27 November 2013 14 Comments

Early this year, Le Labo launched Limette 37, one of its city-exclusive fragrances; this time, the city that inspired the perfume, and the only place you can buy it, is San Francisco.1 I live close enough to San Francisco (in “air miles/minutes”) that I don’t need much of an excuse to fly down, even for a day. Mostly, I travel to San Francisco for art; soon I’ll be visiting to see two exhibits: David Hockney: A Bigger Exhibition at the de Young and (also at the de Young) Modern Nature: Georgia O’Keeffe and Lake George. As luck (the dates of these exhibits) would have it, that means I’ll have to go to San Francisco TWICE before spring! Woo-Hoo!

If Le Labo Limette 37 is really good, I can always grab a bottle at the Le Labo boutique on Fillmore Street…

Maria Candida Gentile Gershwin ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 15 November 2013 25 Comments

George Gershwin

How do I decide which perfume I’ll be reviewing for any given week? Sometimes my choice is inspired by the weather, by my mood, or by the timeliness of a new release. On the other hand, chance sometimes plays a role: last Sunday morning, I was looking over a handful of sample vials, trying to make a selection, when George Gershwin’s An American in Paris came on the radio. My eye fell on one of the samples in front of me: Gershwin, then!

Maria Candida Gentile is an Italian perfumer who trained in Grasse; her fragrances are all evocatively named and seem to contain an unusually high percentage of natural ingredients…

Parfums de Nicolai L’Eau a la Folie & Ayala Moriel Etrog ~ fragrance reviews

Posted by Robin on 26 June 2012 33 Comments

peach

Today, as I pack for my first summer vacation, quick reviews of two fragrances perfect for summer wear, on vacation or otherwise.

Parfums de Nicolaï L’Eau à la Folie

We’ve had debates here before about fruity florals — a segment of the perfumista community frowns on fruity florals simply because they’re so ubiquitous, and let’s face it, many (maybe even most) of them are pretty dull. But I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: some of my best friends are fruity florals. French niche house Parfums de Nicolaï made one of my favorites, the sadly discontinued sparkling mango summer-cocktail Eau Exotique. The brand’s latest, L’Eau à la Folie, is a citrus fruity floral that I’d likewise describe as a sparkling summer-cocktail, this time with peach, juniper berry, pink pepper, mint, lime, jasmine and rum…
