Maison Francis Kurkdjian Petit Matin ~ fragrance review & a quick poll

Posted by Robin on 18 October 2016 141 Comments

Maison Francis Kurkdjian Petit Matin brand image

Pretending that you’re an artist when what you’ve made smells like the fragrance right next to it… all that bullshit! The business is full of bullshit.

Hear, hear! That’s perfumer Francis Kurkdjian, at the end of a long discussion with Persolaise about why perfumery is not art (among other subjects — if you have not read the interview, it is worth the time, and don’t miss part 2). It’s the sort of thing most perfumers don’t say in public, and his candor is one of many reasons I have always found Mr. Kurkdjian — or at least, his public persona — extremely likable.

I don’t always find his perfumes as appealing as his person, though. That is not to say I don’t like his work, because I do think he’s a brilliant perfumer. But in general I don’t feel the same sort of natural affinity for his perfumes that I do for those of some other perfumers or brands…

Citrus with a twist: Imaginary Authors Mosaic & Providence Perfume Co Tangerine Thyme

Posted by Robin on 13 September 2016 9 Comments

Fête du Citron, Menton

Yes, summer is very nearly over — but nearly over is not over, right? There are still a few warm days ahead where I live. Here are quick reviews of two last-gasp-of-summer citrus fragrances, and do add any of your own favorites that you’ll miss as the days get colder.

Imaginary Authors Mosaic

I’m not going to repeat the whole fake novel by a fake author backstory since I promised a quick review — suffice it to say that Mosaic involves “a spring-fed, Roman-style bathhouse on the edge of The Black Forest in the seemingly serene German village of Baden-Baden”…

Friday scent of the day 7/8

Pantone lemon zest

Friday is here! Our community project for today: wear a citrus cologne, classic or modern.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I’m wearing Carthusia Mediterraneo (perfect for today’s “excessive heat warning”) over Tauer Perfumes Rose Delight Body Oil…

April Aromatics Ray of Light ~ perfume review

Posted by Robin on 22 March 2016 22 Comments

lime slices

Berlin-based indie botanical brand April Aromatics has been around since about 2011, but as usual I’m way behind. I’ve tried a few but no more — if you have a favorite, do comment and tell us what it is! I was impressed by the ylang-sweetened jasmine-fest Jasmina, but today I’m going to talk about Ray of Light, a unisex aromatic citrus that debuted in 2014. The brand description is pretty on target, so I will repeat some of it here:

Picture a classical still life: citrus fruits surrounded by mint leaves, a pipe on the side – this is how an artist would capture this fragrance in a painting…

Atelier Cologne Bergamote Soleil ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 17 March 2016 17 Comments

Atelier Cologne Bergamote Soleil

Atelier Cologne recently launched Bergamote Soleil, the latest addition to its Cologne Absolue collection. Bergamote Soleil’s composition includes top notes of bergamot, bigarade and ambrette; heart notes of jasmine, lavender and cardamom; and base notes of vetiver, oak moss and white amber. And like every Atelier Cologne fragrance, this one comes with a story:

They drove all night long taking turns… The minivan was the same one they had when they first met. He spotted it instantly, driving along the line of bergamot trees leading up to the villa…
