Two verbena fragrances: L’Occitane & Le Couvent des Minimes

Posted by Robin on 3 March 2006 23 Comments

L'Occitane Verbena

I love the cheerful, summery scent of lemon verbena. Back when I used to garden, I always had a plant in with the other herbs. These days I settle for a nice splash of perfume. Today I am trying two bargain renditions of lemon verbena:

L’Occitane Verbena (Verveine in French; shown above) is a blend of lemon verbena, lemon tree and geranium. It has a nice fizzy start, mildly green and very crisp. The dry down is tart but sweet, and smells just like lemon sorbet. Just as I am starting to wish it was just a tad drier, the whole thing is over and it is time to reapply.

It is a simple fragrance, perfect for hot summer days, and if you can snag one of the glass spray samples, it is a great thing to keep in your purse…

Comme des Garcons series 4: Cologne

Posted by Robin on 12 January 2006 17 Comments

Comme des Garcons cologne series

Comme des Garçons released Series 4: Cologne in 2002. Each of the three fragrances is a variation on the classic citrus-based cologne theme.

Anbar is the Arabic word for amber, and the fragrance has notes of amber, mandarin, orange blossom, lavender, clove and musk. It starts with bright citrus notes, and settles quickly into a mild blend with a whisper of dry orange blossom over pale amber undertones. It has a touch of spice, but overall, it is more bright than dark. The lasting power is fine considering the strength, and it is nicely done, but for the moment I am not captivated so I am setting my sample aside for another try in the summer…

Bond no. 9 Eau de New York fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 11 October 2005 17 Comments

Bond no 9 Eau de New York perfume

Eau de New York was released by Bond no. 9 in 2004. The fragrance was created by nose Vera Vanore of Robertet, and features notes of grapefruit, mandarin, bergamot, petit grain, fresh greens, neroli, gardenia, cyclamen, white lily, basil, verbena, jasmine, vetiver, oakmoss, skin musk, and white wood.

Eau de New York starts with a blast of zingy citrus overlaid with green notes. The citrus notes last well into the dry down, which is largely fresh, transparent florals with lots of neroli and an herbal undertone from the basil…

Annick Goutal Eau du Sud and Eau d’Hadrien fragrance review

Annick Goutal Eau du Sud and Eau d'Hadrien

Summer is winding down, and I am giving all my favorite citrus fragrances a last hurrah before putting them away until deep winter, when they will move to the front of my cabinet again so that I can pretend it isn’t really freezing cold outside. Annick Goutal Eau du Sud is one of my favorites (see my Top 10 of Summer list). It was launched in 1996, and has notes of bergamot, mandarin orange, grapefruit, lemon verbena, peppermint, basil, persian lime, and woods.

Eau du Sud starts with strong citrus, heavy on the bergamot and grapefruit…

Carthusia Mediterraneo fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 31 August 2005 19 Comments

Carthusia Mediteranneo fragrance

Mediterraneo is based on an old recipe used at the Monastery of St. Giacomo, and was reconfigured for the Italian line Carthusia by nose Laura Tonatto. The fragrance launched in 2002, and features notes of lemon leaves and green tea.

Mediterraneo starts with tart, juicy lemon and lots of green: crushed green leaves, dried green tea leaves, lemon verbena, and maybe even a hint of lime peel. The green tea intensifies as it dries down, and there are vague hints of other fruits and light florals. After a hour or so, it gets ever so slightly soapy, but it is not at all harsh or aggressively clean…
