Four (affordable) summer fragrances from Dawn Spencer Hurwitz

Posted by Robin on 17 July 2009 58 Comments

pink-grapefruit

We’ve had weird weather here this summer. Most of June was cold and rainy and more like April than June. At the end of the month, things finally shaped up, and the normal June weather — perfect warm sunny days with almost no humidity, followed by perfect clear and cool nights — hung around right through the middle of July. In that sort of weather, there’s no need to pack away your fall and winter favorites: you can wear any perfume you like.

Then just when I’d been lulled into complacency, summer started first thing yesterday morning, and with a vengeance: hot, humid, generally nasty, with the added thrill of a late afternoon thunderstorm. The Estée Lauder Jasmine White Moss I was wearing happily the week before? No way would I have worn that yesterday. So. Here are four unisex fragrances from the indie house of Dawn Spencer Hurwitz. Three greens, one citrus, and all four can make it through the nastiest summer heat.

Wasabi Shiso (Essence Oils collection)

Does a fragrance with wasabi + shiso sound good to you? I’m guessing that if it does, you’ll love this…

Czech & Speake Citrus Paradisi, No. 88 and Frankincense & Myrrh ~ fragrance reviews

Posted by Kevin on 1 July 2009 56 Comments

Czech & Speake colognes

There’s something strange about buying a perfume from the same people who manufacture your toilet bowl and bathroom sink. Imagine Kohler or American Standard coming out with a line of luxury perfumes in the United States — would anyone buy them? U.K. bath/kitchen fittings maker Czech & Speake has had great success with its home and personal fragrances, and today I’m reviewing three of Czech & Speake’s nine perfumes.

Citrus Paradisi

California grapefruit, coriander, pepper, patchouli, oak moss

Citrus Paradisi starts with intense grapefruit (smooth and rich) and spices (accent on the coriander); a ‘polite’ patchouli note and some sheer moss comprise the base notes. This is a pleasant, “warm” citrus cologne…

ShiKai Yuzu Moisturizing Shower Gel ~ scented body products

Posted by Pia on 23 May 2009 34 Comments

Yuzu fruit

I’ve been meaning to review a rather happy little product for a long time, but have been swamped under tomes of psychoanalytic theory and patristic theology. Perhaps unsurprisingly, when I finally emerged last night from my last exam for the year, I was in sore need of a cheerful and uncomplicated pick-me up. After a long luxurious night’s sleep, this morning I was revived and pleased to spend some time appreciating the happy little product I had forgotten all about — ShiKai’s Yuzu Moisturizing Shower Gel.

I picked up a bottle of this shower gel last winter after reading good things about its moisturizing properties. ShiKai’s shower gels contain colloidal oatmeal and aloe vera gel, and they’re also vegan and soap-free, with no animal testing. Given all that, I was happily surprised to find that it lathers nicely, leaves my skin softer after rinsing, and has a highly enjoyable fragrance…

Bond no. 9 Brooklyn, Ormonde Jayne Zizan ~ brief fragrance reviews

Posted by Robin on 18 February 2009 83 Comments

Bond no. 9 Brooklyn fragrance

Brooklyn, which launches next month, will be Bond no. 9’s 33rd fragrance. As is the case with many of the brand’s recent offerings, the packaging is half the fun; some people objected to the graffiti-covered bottle as a representation of Brooklyn, but I’m in love. Really, Bond ought to start letting their customers choose the bottle they’d like with their favorite fragrance, don’t you think? And as long as we’re dreaming, have all the empty bottles available in, say, 15 ml?

Brooklyn is a unisex fragrance from perfumer Laurent LeGuernec…

Comme des Garcons Series 8: Energy C Lemon, Lime & Grapefruit ~ fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 29 May 2008 24 Comments

Comme des Garcons Series 8 Energy C fragrances

They're mighty busy over at Comme des Garçons this year: we've already had 888 & Monocle + Comme des Garçons Scent One: Hinoki, and we've still got a number of collaborative scents to come (with Daphne Guinness, H&M, Jun Takahashi & Stephen Jones). The latest launch is Series 8: Energy C, three new fragrances promising a “vitamin rush based on citrus fruit” to “wake up, feel positive, be positive”.

Comme des Garçons has done citrus before, most notably with Series 4: Cologne. To my mind, Series 4 is underrated, and not least of all by me…
