Poetry Sand, Creme, and Vellum ~ scented body products

Poetry Sand, Creme, and Vellum

As I write this post, the temperature in New York City is 102 degrees. In weather like this, we’ll all be bathing more often than usual, so we might as well make the best of it and try out some new body products, right? I’ve been taking advantage of these two-shower days to test a few things from Poetry, a small company that encourages the “Intimate Ritual” of bathing.

Poetry’s bath-and-body line is available in two fragrance blends; I’ve been using samples of products scented with Verse 1, “a versatile citrus fragrance with notes of sandalwood and jasmine.” (The other fragrance is Verse 2, “a potent scent of mint and balsam needle with a hint of grapefruit.”) Verse 1 is strongly citrus, with intense, sunny notes of bergamot and lemon and a smooth woodsy base that suggests cedar as well as sandalwood. I don’t really notice the jasmine, but that’s fine, because the citrus-wood pairing has a cleansing, almost purifying effect on my mind as well as my body. It makes me feel more alert, and purged of all heat-related discomfort, at least for a little while…

Jo Malone Assam & Grapefruit ~ fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 10 February 2011 32 Comments

Pink grapefruit

The brand ethos over at Jo Malone strikes me as decidedly mainstream and (very) British; they’ve made a virtue out of simplicity by emphasizing the layering — or fragrance combining, as they prefer to phrase it — possibilities of their relatively linear, usually clean and often sheer scents. Here and there, they’ve ventured out into the exotic (did anyone try the Cologne Intense collection? I’ve seen nary a word), but with the new unisex Tea collection, they’re back on familiar ground both for them (what could be more British and straightforward than tea?) and for us (tea fragrances not being exactly thin on the ground).

Assam & Grapefruit is my early favorite of the five. I say early because it’s the only one I’ve put on skin more than once, but short of a miracle, nothing is going to topple it from the top of the heap; Sweet Milk would make an agreeable layering agent if you didn’t already have something like Demeter Condensed Milk, but the other three (Fresh Mint Leaf, Sweet Lemon, Earl Grey & Cucumber) failed to move me…

Kings & Queens Sultan of Granada Lemon Flower Body Scrub & Naturopathica Lemongrass Mimosa Body Scrub ~ scented body products

Kings & Queens Sultan of Granada Lemon Flower Body ScrublemonsNaturopathica Lemongrass Mimosa Body Scrub

If you read a few women’s fashion/beauty magazines per month, you’re probably familiar with the kind of feature in which a high-end item is paired with a more attainable, bargain-price item — “Splurge/Steal,” “Lust/Must,” and so on. Sometimes I consider using this device to recommend pairs of body products, except I don’t usually come across direct comparisons. These two body scrubs, however, do fall into a similar category. Both have citrus-floral scents and both are packaged in tubes (my strong preference for scrubs), but they’re sold in different markets at very different price levels.

Kings & Queens is a more widely-distributed spin-off line for Korres, the Greek skincare and makeup company. The Kings & Queens body products claim to be enhanced “with royal herbs,” and like the rest of the line, the Sultan of Granada Lemon Flower Body Scrub is “enriched with royal mix [sic] of pomegranate, blue lotus and malachite natural extracts.” These extracts happen to fall towards the end of the ingredients list, after the water and sodium laureth sulfate and plastic exfoliant beads, but that’s not really unusual for a product in this price range. Because the exfoliating particles are suspended in what amounts to a lightweight shower gel…

Parfum d’Empire Yuzu Fou ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 15 September 2010 41 Comments

Parfum d'Empire Yuzu Fou

Summer is winding down. As the air cools, Eaux de Cologne seem to lose what little power they have; they fade away as quickly as you can apply them to skin. Still, I crave citrus fragrances as the temperature drops, and there are quite a few citrus perfumes that can stand up to fall and winter weather — Parfum d’Empire Yuzu Fou is one of them.

Yuzu Fou (‘crazy yuzu’) Eau de Parfum includes notes of kumquat, bigarade orange (Citrus aurantium), yuzu, mint, green bamboo, verbena, neroli, blond cedar and white musk. Yuzu Fou begins with a mélange of citrus rind and juice aromas that will make you “fou” if you try too hard to differentiate between the cascading scents of sweet (and fleeting) kumquat, sour, lemony yuzu and powerful bigarade orange (also known as Seville orange).

The dominant note, bigarade orange, or “bitter orange,” in Yuzu Fou is not sweet…

Thymes Ambersweet Orange Body Lotion ~ scented body products

Godward's Dolce Far Niente

A number of years ago, when I still shopped for most of my toiletries at drugstores, I received a gift of some fancy lavender-fragranced body cream in a prettily decorated tube. It was one of the first upscale bath-and-body items that I had ever tried, and it was made by Thymes — or rather, The Thymes, as the company was then called. I thoroughly enjoyed it, because it felt and smelled so different from my usual products, and since that time I’ve had a fond feeling for Thymes (even though the Filigree collection, my eventual favorite, was discontinued last year).

The Ambersweet Orange collection is a fairly recent addition to the Thymes range of body products and fragrance, and its Body Lotion sounded like an appropriate pick for early autumn. According to Thymes, in this lotion “the healing properties of creamy yogurt and the warm blush of honey combine to richly moisturize your skin while the harmonizing aromas of delicate orange blossom, creamy almond milk, tonka bean and vanilla swirl gently in the zest of nutmeg, sandalwood and cardamom for a natural goodness that radiates well-being.” Ambersweet Orange Body Lotion gives off a gently sweet almond scent when it’s first applied…
