The daily lemming

Posted by Robin on 20 March 2024 6 Comments

A springtime lemming courtesy of Kevin: Trudon's Versailles candle. "A quintessential accord representing French gardens in spring, both very floral and refreshing. The Versailles Collection, already iconic with its frozen azure-blue vessel and its both highly floral and refreshing fragrance, captures an atmosphere as refined as it is whimsical: a garden created from scratch to entertain and enchant a king, his court and his friends." With litsea cubeba, mint, peonies, thyme, rosemary, tuberose, linden, honeysuckle and oak. In 4 sizes, €42 - €520 (these are not yet on Trudon's US site).

A few hundred thousand candles a year

But she said Trudon manufactures a few hundred thousand candles a year and that “sales have mainly accelerated over the past five years — multiplied by almost four — along with a strong international expansion.” It has a total of 87 workers, including those in its shops around the world.

To keep pace with demand, the manufacturing plant “is nearly doubling in size, from 2,400 square meters to 4,400,” or from 25,835 square feet to 47,360 square feet, Mr. Pruvost said one recent autumn morning as he pushed open the doors of the existing structure, which resembled an airplane hangar.

This year's holiday collection at Cire Trudon is "Astral", featuring four fragrances: Altaïr (silver; "marries the strength of oud with the delicateness of rose"); Fir (blue; "Hints of myrrh and incense absolute bring depth to the perfume’s head notes - Siberian pine and fir tree"); Gabriel (green; "With notes of leather, cashmere wood, and candied chestnuts, the fragrance weaves happy, cozy memories") and Gloria (red; "warms the room with the scent of firewood – composed of notes of Indonesian Patchouli, Haitian Vetiver and cedarwood. Wrapped around it are spicy notes of cinnamon, clove and nutmeg, and a hint of citruses"). In 3 sizes, 270g ($148), 800g ($360) and 2.8kg ($750). There's also a brass candle topper (shown above) for $105 and a taper scented with Gabriel for $55.

The not-quite-daily lemming

Basically if Cire Trudon makes something new, I want it. Here is Tuileries, celebrating Trudon's 380th anniversary. "The Tuileries collection finds its inspiration in a rare document kept at the French National Archives: the Gazette des Atours de la Reine. In what seems like an ordinary notebook, countess Geneviève d’Ossun – a French courtier who served as lady-in-waiting and first maid of honor to Marie Antoinette – gathered many fabric samples used to tailor the sovereigns’ many dresses and royal outfits. The fragrance was conceived as an homage to the rose, the Queen’s favorite flower throughout her life." Additional notes for the fruity floral chypre include pink pepper, blackcurrant, mandarin, white flowers, raspberry, geranium, musk, patchouli, sandalwood and vanilla. Candles in 4 sizes ($55 - $690) or diffuser ($250), at Trudon.
