The daily lemming

Cire Trudon’s holiday collection for 2025 once again includes four candles (“Trudon transports us into the heart of an enchanted night, illuminating the winter sky with its constellations. Beneath the celestial vault, shimmering stars and colorful symbols emerge and come to life: a magical universe unfolds, and enchantment takes hold”). The line up: Fir (Green; “An iconic holiday creation, Fir blends notes of conifer, myrrh, and the deep richness of incense absolute, evoking the powerful olfactory presence of majestic festive fir trees”), Libra (Brown; “An amber-woody scent that evokes winter’s sensuality, Libra—named after the Libra constellation—blends warm, intense notes of amber, cedar, and tonka bean”), Luna (Blue; “Luna bears a soft, floral scent- hints of cedarwood and amber add depth to the perfume’s top notes of rose and peony”) and Nazareth (Magenta, shown below; “Nazareth bears a soft, spicy scent- hints of musk and vanilla add depth to the perfume’s top notes of citrus and clove”). Trudon's "Lost in a moment" limited edition duo for summer, with candles in Under the Trees ("An invigorating green juice Under the Trees unfolds as a refreshing, aromatic-green juice, complemented with bright notes of cedar wood. Its invigorating fragrance is composed of a cucumber accord with a hint of blackcurrant buds in the head notes, a lively spearmint and jasmine heart, fused with notes of cedar in the base") and Summer Haze ("A sweet-floral composition Summer Haze features a sweet and floral scent that exudes pure joy. Sophisticated and daring, the fragrance consists of a red berry macaroon accord in the head notes, an opulent heart of absolute rose and a musky base with warm notes of Tonka bean"). Both fragrances by perfumer Alexandra Carlin, 270g for $140 each at Trudon.

Trudon Versailles candle ~ home fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 14 March 2025 21 Comments

After decades of scented candle experimentation — low, medium and high (we’re talking price points) — I’ve come to realize the aromas inside a jar don’t always match the price tags. Many expensive candles smell cheap or ordinary and some inexpensively priced candles smell heavenly and high end. (And smelling cold wax in a boutique display candle won’t tell you how it will smell once lit.) Buying candles gobbles up money and you can end up feeling blessed or cursed when the moment of truth arrives and match flame hits wick.

Over the years, trial and error has led me back to two candle-making fragrance houses — Astier de Villatte and Trudon. I realized this recently when looking at a gorilla rack in my basement that holds my vases all the candle jars I’ve saved to repurpose…

The Salta candle from Cire Trudon is firmly in my top 5 all time home fragrances (thank you, Kevin) and I would love to have a bottle of the home spray, even though like Kevin, I can't say as I notice any hyacinth in particular. ("Considered by the Chinese as one of the three holy fruits with peach and lemon, the grapefruit was a symbol of prosperity and fertility. Also highly prized by the Greeks and the Romans, the hesperide has a crisp freshness: known for its rich terroir and unique soil, the Salta region enhances the citrus’ intensity. Blended with verbena and hyacinth, the grapefruit fragrance is aromatic." $260 (ouch!) for 375 ml at Trudon.
