Demeter Thunderstorm & Cannabis Flower ~ fragrance reviews

Posted by Robin on 21 November 2006 32 Comments

Demeter Thunderstorm & Cannabis Flower fragrances

Continuing with yesterday’s theme, here are two more fragrances from Demeter:

Thunderstorm was released by Demeter a few years back. It is an extraordinarily evocative scent, almost uncanny in its ability to call up a thunderstorm in early spring: the electricity, the humidity hanging heavy in the air, the almost-metallic rush of ozone. The really fun part — the part that actually smells like a storm — doesn’t last long, but while it does, it is eerie enough that you could probably cause a small child to have a nightmare by spraying it in their room as they were sleeping.

The dry down is the smell that is left after the storm, largely wet leaves and water-soaked earth, and something vaguely chalky that almost mimics the smell of rain drying on hot pavement…

5 from Demeter: Baby Powder, Ginger Cookie, Redhead in Bed, Between the Sheets & Fiery Curry

Demeter fragrances

It has been a long time since I’ve tried anything new from Demeter, the line that specializes in bottling individual smells. Demeter is all about the fun factor; you don’t look to the line for complicated perfumes, and lasting power is not their strong point. Here are a few of their latest fragrance releases:

Baby Powder is, well, just that: a dead ringer for Johnson & Johnsons. A bit of sharpness in the top notes, then, baby powder. I don’t much like the smell of baby powder, but if you do, I suppose this is less messy than the real thing? After 30 minutes, it is very soft and clean and pleasant, actually. Several sprays lasted about 3 hours.

Ginger Cookie: something plastic-ish in the top notes resolves within about a minute, leaving the smell of a ginger cookie — you can see where these reviews are going, right? — heavy on the ginger and molasses and clove. If, like me, you aren’t planning to do any holiday baking this year, this is a nice substitute for the real thing, although be warned, this will make you hungry. If you are planning to bake, there is a recipe on the label. Better than average lasting power. Demeter also makes Gingerale and Gingerbread, but I haven’t tried either…

Home fragrance: Papier d’Armenie

Posted by Kevin on 19 November 2006 16 Comments

Papier d'Armenie home fragrance

In the late 1800s, Auguste Ponsot, a Frenchman, traveled through Armenia and noticed that many people fragranced and disinfected their homes and businesses by burning benzoin (a resin produced by trees of the genus Styrax). Personal and public hygiene were hot topics at the time in France, and Ponsot felt Europeans, too, could benefit from burning benzoin at home. Realizing most ‘modern’ European families would not go to the trouble of burning raw benzoin, he sought the help of a pharmacist, Henri Rivier, to come up with an easy way to burn the resin.

Rivier dissolved raw benzoin in 90% alcohol, added some “secret” aromatics to the mixture, and soaked paper in the sweetly scented liquid. The paper was put through a saline bath to make it burn slowly. This fragrant paper was then burned and its smoke scented and cleansed the air. The new product was called Papier d’Arménie and became popular immediately. It has been produced for over 120 years in the Paris suburb of Montrouge…

L’Occitane Ruban d’Orange ~ fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 10 November 2006 37 Comments

L'Occitane Ruban d'OrangeL'Occitane Ruban d'Orange

Ruban d’Orange is the latest fragrance from the L’Occitane en Provence chain, which is becoming very nearly as ubiquitous as Starbucks. Ruban d’Orange is being advertised with the tag line “bring sunshine to winter”, and has notes of Calabrian lemon, mandarin and sweet orange of Sicily, bitter orange of Seville, green fig, vetiver, tonka bean and cedar.

I am a citrus-lover, and have found two holy grail fragrances in this category already: Carthusia Mediterraneo for lemon, Parfums de Nicolaï Balle de Match for grapefruit. Lime and orange are still up for grabs, and orange seems particulary hard to do right, or at least to do right in a way that keeps your attention for more than 15 minutes…

Crazylibellule & The Poppies Encens Mystic perfume review

Crazylibellule & The Poppies Encens Mystic solid perfume

I love a good bargain, but you wouldn’t know it from this site — it has been ages since we’ve managed to include anything in the budget perfume category around here. In general, I am buying less and less all the time, regardless of price. My perfume collection already overfloweth, and the bigger it gets, the harder it is for me to convince myself that something new is full-bottle-worthy. But sometimes you just feel the need to spend, even if your wallet is somewhat less than full, and hence my latest acquisition: Encens Mystic.

Encens Mystic is one of the solid perfumes from the Crazylibellule & The Poppies Shanghaijava Collection. These are nifty little 5 gram twist-ups in bright paper packaging, bigger than a lipstick but still small enough to throw in your purse…
