Bath & Body Works Midnight Pomegranate Shower Gel & Body Lotion ~ scented body products

Posted by Jessica on 4 March 2007 18 Comments

Bath & Body Works Midnight Pomegranate Body Lotion

Bath & Body Works recently released the Midnight Pomegranate line of products as an addition to its Signature Collection. This new fragrance, as described by the company, includes top notes of pomegranate, sparkling citrus, dewberry, anise, cinnamon, nutmeg; heart notes of cassis, blackberry, iris, jasmine, raspberry; and base notes of musk, sandalwood, vanilla, tobacco, patchouli.

This list of notes led me to hope that Midnight Pomegranate body products would layer well with Jo Malone Pomegranate Noir Cologne, whose pomegranate rests on a spicy base of frankincense and patchouli…

Home Fragrance: A Floral Trio ~ Baieido’s Daffodil, Lavender and Rose Incense

Posted by Kevin on 2 March 2007 7 Comments

Baieido Lavender & Rose incense

In my garden, two events signal the arrival of spring: the return of “my” almost-tame, almost-pigeon-sized male robin and the shoots of daffodils emerging from the soil. The robin has been singing, nesting, and begging for food at my home for seven springs and summers — I hope he survived another winter. He’s such an appreciative bird, so encouraging as I cut the thick grass and towering weeds in the yard and expose delicious bugs, provide piles of nest-building materials and toss him earthworms to eat. The daffodils, often blooming in cool, wet weather, smell “chilled”, their fresh green-pollen scent restrained by the nippy, moist air. When the flowers are cut for bouquets and brought inside the warm house, their fragrance grows stronger, sultry, but still possesses a dewy quality.

I have found precious few floral incense blends that smell like real flowers but I keep sniffing…

The Healing Garden Passion Rose All Day Moisture Body Creme

Posted by Jessica on 14 January 2007 9 Comments

The Healing Garden Passion Rose scented body productsAs I stood in the aisle of Duane Reade and reached for a tube of The Healing Garden’s Sensual Therapy Passion Rose All Day Moisture Body Crème, I reflected on the endurance of my obsession with rose fragrance. I have been wearing rose-based perfumes for much of my life, and I own a selection of favorites. Since I also like rose body products, to wear with the perfumes or on their own, I habitually scan the shelves of stores ranging from Takashimaya to Target for rose-scented body lotions, many of which I eventually buy and try. However, unlike the dozens of rose perfumes that have won my heart over the years, rose lotions typically disappoint me…

Perfume review: Rochas Femme, Vintage & New

Posted by Angela on 18 December 2006 66 Comments

Rochas Femme, print advert

I’m staring at my bottle of Rochas Femme right now, and try as I might, I can’t see its reputed resemblance to Mae West. To me, it looks a lot more like Mighty Mouse. Not only does Femme’s bottle not look like Mae West, but its fragrance wings past the fusty, comic actress and lands straight on Marilyn Monroe: Marilyn as she rises from an afternoon nap, intimate, warm, hair mussed.

Femme smells voluptuous and intensely personal. It is the smell of your mother on her still-warm bed when you were a girl, or the scent that a maid in a posh resort shakes from the sheets every day…

Perfume Review: Balenciaga Prelude and Cristobal

Posted by Angela on 28 November 2006 13 Comments

Balenciaga Cristobal perfume advert

Although Balenciaga Prelude and Cristobal are clearly different fragrances, they are similar in many ways. In another Balenciaga review, I compared Rumba and Talisman to sisters. If you’ll allow me to flog that analogy one more time, let me present the Balenciaga brothers: Prelude, the eldest; and Cristobal, mommy’s little boy.

Prelude follows the tradition of two of Balenciaga’s other scents — Quadrille and Rumba — in being named after a form of music. But Prelude is more Beethoven than Chopin and more cello than piano. Prelude opens with a hint of brightness from aldehydes and bergamot, then quickly settles into a spicy, almost gummy stage, like a stick of cinnamon chewing gum might taste if it were made by Fortnum & Mason and stored in an amber case. Just enough carnation and jasmine surround the cinnamon to soften the edges. Prelude is deep and nostalgic smelling, but for all its depth it doesn’t last more than a few hours. Prelude was released in 1982, with top notes of aldehydes, bergamot, orange, and pimento; a heart of carnation, jasmine, rose, ylang-ylang, orchid, and cinnamon; and a base of amber, vanilla, patchouli, civet, benzoin, tolu, and olibanum.

Cristobal, named after Cristobal Balenciaga…
