Pacifica Mediterranean Fig ~ fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 19 June 2007 27 Comments

Pacifica Mediterranean Fig

I think that monogamy is artificial. I do not think it’s something that comes naturally to us.

Yep, that’s Tom Ford*, source of all wisdom. Whether it is true for human relationships is outside of our subject matter, but I can certainly relate when it comes to fragrance. I already have a holy grail fig scent, Diptyque Philosykos, and I must talk about it more than I realize because several people mentioned in the comments recently that they thought of it as my signature fragrance. But the road of monogamy is long and hard, and when a new fig fragrance is launched, you can bet I want to try it. If it’s reasonably priced, all the better…

Roger & Gallet Carnation Perfumed Soap ~ scented body products

Posted by Jessica on 9 June 2007 16 Comments

Roger & Gallet Carnation soap

Rereading Robin’s recent reviews of carnation fragrances, I was inspired finally to open the bar of Roger & Gallet Carnation soap that has been resting on my bathroom shelf for a while. Carnation is one of my favorite notes in perfumes, second only to rose, and I have just started to explore carnation-scented body products to accompany some of my fragrances.

The Roger & Gallet website is full of information about the company and its products, including a history of the company (which dates back to the Napoleonic era) and a lively feature on its perfumed soaps. In 1879, Roger & Gallet released a lavender-scented soap in an innovative round shape: until then, they claim, commercial soaps had only been produced in squares and rectangles. These circular luxuries became trademark products for Roger & Gallet, and the company still takes pride in the quality of its soap. According to the website, the soap’s vegetal base is manufactured by a “traditional cauldron method” and is “core-fragranced” with essential oils. Each finished soap looks like a gift, wrapped in pleated paper and sealed with a decorative paper ring bearing the company seal, which almost seems a shame to open…

Bvlgari Omnia Crystalline ~ fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 4 June 2007 45 Comments

Bvlgari Omnia Crystalline perfume

Bvlgari introduced the original Omnia fragrance in 2003. Omnia is a spicy oriental by perfumer Alberto Morillas, and marries spices with trendy gourmand notes like tea, chocolate and almond while managing to be neither heavy nor overly foody. It smells like a nicely spiced wood scent, very sheer, very modern. It is one of my favorites from Bvlgari, and makes a great, nearly year-round woody comfort fragrance.

Omnia got its first flanker in 2005, with Omnia Crystalline…

Perfume for a picnic

Posted by Angela on 31 May 2007 30 Comments

Picnic scene

At last, the weather is starting to warm up. Now I can open my office window to fill the house with air scented by honeysuckle, lilies, and roses from the garden. It won’t be long before I start scheming dinners to take down to the river as the sun sets. Of course I wonder, what perfume should I wear for a picnic?

I turned to Teresa Mitchell, founder and Creative Director of Beautyhabit, for a few suggestions. It turns out that she’s a big fan of picnics and had suggestions for both spring and fall picnics. For a spring picnic she suggested Ineke Balmy Days and Sundays, Potter & Moore Bergamot & Green Ginger, and Parfum d’Empire Eau Suave. Balmy Days and Sundays she chose because “the name says it all!”, and, wearing it, I have to agree. It’s a warm floral that smells like a hot afternoon as storm clouds gather over an urban flower garden. Bergamot & Green Ginger is crisper and more tart. Teresa describes it simply as “herbs, freshness, citrus — natural and light”. I swear I smell lily in it, too. Eau Suave is more of a classic cologne and purports to smell like Empress Josephine’s imperial greenhouses. My grandpa used to have a greenhouse beside his trailer where, beer and cigarette in hand, he tended orchids. It sure didn’t smell like Eau Suave in there. To me, Eau Suave’s elegance would be terrific for a meal outdoors, but one at a garden party and not on a blanket on the ground…

Hot Fudge Sundae from the Demeter Jelly Belly Collection ~ fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 30 May 2007 29 Comments

Demeter Jelly Belly Hot Fudge Sundae perfume

I like candy, but in general, I’m a chocolate kind of person. I love dark chocolate, the darker the better, but I’m not a snob about it: I also love Hot Fudge Pop-Tarts, and several other treats that might more properly be called “chocolate food product” than “chocolate”. Fruit candy doesn’t interest me at all — to eat or to wear as perfume — so the recently released Demeter Jelly Belly Collection didn’t seem like likely to wow me, and by and large, it didn’t. The fragrances are based on Jelly Belly recipes, which call for popping a specific group of flavored jelly beans into your mouth to produce the desired taste effect…
