Scented household cleaners from Earth Friendly Products

Posted by Pia on 15 October 2007 14 Comments

Earth Friendly Products Grapefruit Dish Washing LiquidIn light of the increasing awareness, discussion and even debate about climate change and the environment, I wanted to take a look at some ‘eco-friendly’ scented house products this month. I confess that I have never been a big purchaser of specifically eco-friendly products as I rarely find them as compelling (both on and off the shelf) as I do their non eco-friendly counterparts. That may only be because I am a willing victim of superior marketing budgets, but often I find the fragrances less interesting as well. There are of course many cases in the fragrance industry where ‘all natural’ is also a top of the line item, but they tend to be fairly pricey.

So starting with the basics, like home cleaning items, I thought it would be great to find products that smell fantastic, are eco-friendly and financially viable. Today I will be reviewing a number of items I purchased online from Earth Friendly Products.

Dishmate Grapefruit Dish Washing Liquid ~ First off, let me say one delight of these products was being able to pronounce their contents, and to count the number of ingredients on one hand…

Alba Botanica Sugar Cane Body Polish ~ scented body products

Posted by Lucy on 14 October 2007 14 Comments

Alba Sugar Cane Body Polish

I confess I stalk the aisles of the personal care sections of health food stores, and I feel well rewarded when I discover an affordable product that works as well as Alba Botanica’s Sugar Cane Body Polish. It is like comfort food for dry skin. There is the high sugar and fat content (Hawaiian sugar cane juice, honey, kukui nut, macadamia nut and sunflower oils with vitamin E). And there are no unpronounceable or mysterious ingredients whatsoever.

Sugar Cane Body Polish’s large sugar granules are suspended in an rich, slushy base of sugar cane juice and nut oils. They dissolve slowly in a hot shower…

Penhaligon’s Violetta Talcum Powder and Colonial Williamsburg Powder of Violets ~ scented body products

Posted by Jessica on 7 October 2007 15 Comments

Penhaligon's Violetta Dusting Powder

Dusting powder is a wonderfully nostalgic treat. It’s not a strictly necessary grooming ritual, but the act of patting a fragranced powder onto the body with a fluffy puff can make anyone feel like the flawlessly beautiful star of a 1930s film, even without a bias-cut satin gown or an Art Deco dressing table. Of course, the use of talc to scent and soften the skin predates Hollywood by a few centuries, so it seems appropriate that some long-established merchants are keeping its tradition alive. Penhaligon’s is a perfumery founded during the Victorian era, and Colonial Williamsburg is the recreation of an eighteenth-century city; appropriately enough, both offer body powders scented with violet fragrance…

Body Moose Honey Harmony Gator Hydrator ~ scented body products

Posted by Jessica on 23 September 2007 6 Comments

Body Moose Honey Harmonly Gator HydratorWith its string of playful names and its retro-preppy packaging, Body Moose Honey Harmony Gator Hydrator would be easy to dismiss as a merely “fun” treat for the body. However, as soon as I actually smelled and touched this product, I forgot all about alligators and bumblebees and pink-and-green polka dots, and I realized that it’s actually a serious and sensual moisturizer for the body.

Gator Hydrator is a balm with an unusual texture: it feels solid but slightly spongy to the touch, like a piece of Turkish Delight dessert. It looks almost too thick to use. However, if you apply some pressure and scoop up a bit…

Yves Rocher Rose Absolue ~ fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 19 September 2007 70 Comments

Yves Rocher Rose Absolue fragrance

Voile d’Ambre, the first entry in Yves Rocher’s Secrets D’Essences line, was so nicely done (even to this amber-hater) that I was tempted by their new Rose Absolue fragrance as soon as I heard about it. Adding to my “why I should buy Rose Absolue” list: it was developed by perfumer Christine Nagel, who also did the lovely 2000 et Une Rose / Mille et Une Roses for Lancome, and best of all, 5 ml miniatures of the Eau de Parfum can be had for $3.

When I purchased Rose Absolue last month, Yves Rocher was running a 2-for-1 special, so I got 10 ml for my $3 investment. I won’t be at all surprised if that turns out to be the biggest perfume bargain I manage to score in 2007, as the fragrance itself turns out to be lovely. It starts out creamy and dewy-sweet, with a hint of spice (the notes: cinnamon, apple, Turkish, Bulgarian and Morrocan rose, cedar, patchouli and tonka bean). The rose is slightly fruity, but I don’t smell apple, and it is just as well — I was a bit worried that with the apple and cinnamon, this might end up smelling like a rose-apple pie. Rose Absolue does have a bit of a gourmand feel, but it isn’t overwhelmingly foody by any means, nor is it cloyingly sweet…
