Estee Lauder Youth Dew Body Creme ~ scented body products

Posted by Jessica on 8 November 2007 8 Comments

Estee Lauder Youth Dew Body Creme

There is an often-told anecdote about Youth Dew. In the 1960s, Estée Lauder visited the Galeries Lafayette in Paris with a proposal for opening a counter there; however, the department store’s buyers were not interested in carrying her products. On her way out, the story goes, Estée not-so-accidentally spilled some Youth Dew bath oil on the store’s carpet. So many customers noticed the resulting aroma and demanded to purchase the oil that the store relented and placed an order for the entire Lauder line. As Angela has pointed out in her review of Youth Dew, its sillage is just as potent now as it was decades ago. I own and love the Eau de Parfum, but when I prefer to keep Youth Dew’s rich, retro spiciness all to myself, I wear the Body Creme instead.

Youth Dew Perfumed Body Creme is the heaviest lotion I’ve ever owned, literally: its jar of ribbed, frosted glass is weighty enough to cause severe pain if dropped on an unsuspecting foot (although, I suppose, a true Youth Dew wearer would be sure-handed enough never to drop it). Its lid is gleaming gold, as shiny as the interlacing initials of the Estée Lauder logo embossed on the pale turquoise and white box…

Demeter Egg Nog & Crayon ~ quick fragrance reviews

Posted by Robin on 5 November 2007 15 Comments

Demeter Egg Nog perfume

In introducing their new Egg Nog fragrance, Demeter made the claim “If you love Egg Nog, you’ll love Demeter’s Egg Nog…and if you hate it, maybe you just haven’t had GOOD Egg Nog”. I am in a different bind: I can’t remember what egg nog really tastes like. I haven’t had it in years. I don’t think I ever liked it, but honestly I’m not even sure…

Kusco-Murphy Bedroom Hair ~ scented body products

Kusco Murphy Bedroom Hair

Every fragrance addict owns a few scented products that she (or he) privately opens just to sniff, even when she’s not using them; they may be actual perfumes, lotions or soaps, or even hair products. My latest confession in this area is my strange need to unscrew my jar of Kusco-Murphy Bedroom Hair and inhale its fragrance every time I spot the jar sitting on the bathroom counter.

Bedroom Hair is certainly attractive enough to leave out in plain view, unlike the squeezed-out tubes and brightly colored plastic bottles that are concealed under my sink. Its label design is a little bit romantic and little bit rock-and-roll, with gold, monogram-like letters scrolling across a purple background. The product inside is similarly enticing, a shimmering golden gel…

Three Fierce Green Chypres: Sisley Eau du Soir, Parfumerie Generale Corps et Ames, and Niki de Saint Phalle

Posted by Angela on 23 October 2007 70 Comments

Niki de Saint Phalle perfume

When people talk about big, knock-‘em-out scents, they often mean white florals like Robert Piguet Fracas or Annick Goutal Passion or heady 1980s orientals like Yves Saint Laurent Opium and Chanel Coco. I’d like to add another category of perfume to this list: the fierce green chypre. I’m not talking about a moody green chypre like Jacomo Silences or a modulated green chypre like Estée Lauder Private Collection. I mean a no-apologies, cuts-like-a-knife, love-it-or-loathe-it green chypre. At the top of the list of fierce green chypres are Sisley Eau du Soir, Parfumerie Générale Corps et Ames, and Niki de Saint Phalle.

A fierce green chypre isn’t easy to wear…

Lush Charity Pot Hand and Body Lotion ~ scented body products

Posted by Jessica on 20 October 2007 6 Comments

Lush Charity Pot hand & body lotion

Charity Pot, a newcomer to Lush’s shelves, wears its conscience on its sleeve — or rather, on its lid. According to Lush, all proceeds from the sale of this fragranced lotion will benefit a number of charitable organizations and activist groups, which are identified by stickers on the tops of the containers.

When I purchased a tub of Charity Pot in the United Kingdom last spring, it was designated with the logo for No Widening M1, an alliance opposed to the widening of the M1 motorway in England. Since then, I’ve been curious to see which organizations would be chosen for the North American launch of this product. So far, the list includes Clean Ocean Action, Amazon Conservation Team, Tree People, UNICEF, International Fund for Animal Welfare, and WaterCan. And, like all of Lush’s other products, this one is produced with ecological and environmental awareness, since no animal testing is allowed, limited synthetic ingredients are used, and the packaging is kept as minimal as possible…
