Incense fragrances from Tauer Perfumes, Demeter, Matthew Williamson

Posted by Robin on 22 April 2008 73 Comments

Tauer

Yesterday I wore two discontinued favorites: L’Artisan’s lovely Jacinthe des Bois and Gobin Daudé’s Sous Le Buis. Layered, the combination was the perfect spring-time fragrance: happy, floral, and very green. But the cool evenings of spring are also perfect for incense fragrances. Here are four worth considering:

I loved Incense extrême by Tauer Perfumes, and I can’t remember now why I took it into my head that I wouldn’t like the newer Incense rosé nearly as well. Whatever the reason, I was quite wrong, as I like it even better. This is a simply lovely fragrance, not quite so bright and airy as the extrême, but still, not quite dark: it has the same soaring quality…

Ungaro Diva and Paloma Picasso Mon Parfum ~ two 1980s rose chypres

On weekends I work at a vintage clothing shop. I love the Jean Harlow dressing gowns and Grace Kelly day dresses we stock, but I’ve noticed a steadily growing clientele for Pat Benatar blazers and even Debby Boone gauchos. Yes, for some of us the ’80s are back. You wouldn’t catch me dead in an ultrasuede shirt or leggings, but I have to admit that I adore a whopping 1980s rose chypre. At the top of my list are Ungaro Diva and Paloma Picasso Mon Parfum…

Perk Lip Lattes ~ scented body products

Perk Lip Lattes

As I write this review, I am drinking a cup of coffee. It’s not an unusual circumstance for me, and I suspect that more than a few of you might be joining me in this ritual as you read. If so, you might share my interest in Perk Lip Lattes. Each of these lip balms, made by a small Brooklyn-based company called Crazy Rumors, is labeled as “a coffee break for your lips.”

So far, I’ve tried two of the six blends of Lip Latte: Coffee Bean and Mocha. Smelling the Coffee Bean balm, I felt as though I had just entered one of those little shops that roast and grind their own coffee, where you can order beans by the pound or just a freshly-brewed cup to go…

Bijan Nude For Men ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 27 March 2008 58 Comments

I’m a fan of the two original Bijan fragrances (Bijan Men and Bijan Women). When they were first released, those perfumes were sold at Bijan’s own shop in Beverly Hills and at “prestigious” department stores like Bullocks Wilshire in Los Angeles. These days, I’m not sure if Bijan perfumes are sold anywhere but at his store and discount perfume shops. Bijan prides himself on the exclusivity and high quality of the products he sells, and I’m sure Bijan has smelled and worn some great fragrances over the years, so it’s a shock that the most recent (2007) Bijan release, Nude for Men, smells so bad and is of such low quality. Either Bijan has lost his sense of smell or (as I suspect) he has zero input on the cosmetics that bear his name. Five Star Fragrance Co. (the perfume manufacturer and distributor known for such ‘classics’ as GALORE and ROYAL SECRET) makes Bijan Nude, and as of this writing, their website is non-operational. I believe Bijan Nude was created specifically for the discount market — the perfume equivalent of a new movie bypassing theatrical release and going straight to DVD…

Hugo Naturals Brown Sugar & Kumquat Body Scrub ~ scented body products

Posted by Pia on 16 March 2008 Leave a Comment

Eranthis flowersSpring is coming. There are days when the pure white bells of the snowdrops lift my spirits and assure me that this is true. And I am even more convinced now that I have seen the bright yellow sun of eranthis petals against the richly dark and still cold wet earth, their little green leaves spreading out like a fan around them. But it is still March, and it is still part lion! And even my skin confirms that winter has not disappeared — so I continue to take refuge in an array of body scrubs in the hopes of staving off that late winter sense of 'dried out' blues.

My latest favorite — not least for the reasonable price and eco-friendly approach — is the Hugo Naturals Brown Sugar & Kumquat Body Scrub. It contains brown sugar and emollients such as kukui oil, jojoba ester, kosher vegetable glycerin, and others, and offers a warm and cheering scent without being too overbearing or winter-like…
