Lolita Lempicka by Lolita Lempicka ~ perfume review

Posted by Robin on 15 June 2008 69 Comments

Designer Lolita Lempicka's eponymous perfume, launched in 1997, was already being compared to its obvious forebear, Thierry Mugler Angel, before it even hit the stores, although Parfums Lolita Lempicka insisted that their scent was much more floral. Still, of all the many spawn of Angel, as I like to think of them, Lolita Lempicka might be the most successful, both commercially (it was a top seller) and artistically.

And it is more floral. Perfumer Annick Menardo developed Lolita Lempicka, and she toned down some of Angel's darker, more jarring elements and replaced them with a sweeter, “prettier”, less challenging blend of violet, iris and licorice…

Carol’s Daughter Tui Hair Oil ~ scented body products

Posted by Jessica on 7 June 2008 14 Comments

Carol's Daughter Tui Hair OilTui Hair Oil from Carol’s Daughter is a fragranced product that looks just the way it smells. Orange- and red-tinted dried flowers float and drift within its gold-colored liquid, creating a dreamy, sunset-hued effect that reminds me variously of a lava lamp, a tropical cocktail, or some arts-and-craft project from nature camp.

I was initially a bit hesitant about using Tui Hair Oil, especially since the ingredients (primarily corn oil, “infused with chamomile and calendula”) sounded too heavy for my hair. I tried it first as a deep-conditioning treatment on a weekend morning, rubbing a quarter-size amount of the oil into my hair (avoiding my scalp) and leaving it there for a half-hour before shampooing. While it was soaking in, I was able to enjoy its scent. Carol’s Daughter describes the Tui fragrance as a blend of guava, mango, and passion fruit…

Roger & Gallet’s Linden Blossom Moisturizing Shower Cream, and some thoughts on linden

Posted by Pia on 1 June 2008 40 Comments

Linden blossoms

I first became aware of the delightful scent of linden blossom some years ago. I was having a lovely stroll in a nearby park, and as I meandered under the cover of some stately trees, a fresh and sweetly honeyed-green fragrance surrounded me, blending with the dappled late afternoon sunlight and the grounding scent of warm scuffed earth and stone. I later discovered that this was the well known linden blossom, lime blossom, or tilleul. It fast became a favorite of mine, particularly in home fragrances and body products. Quietly refreshing, its limber green structure is interwoven with a hint of tang and a gentle airy sweetness. In home fragrances in particular, I find it has a charm that is both elegant and fresh.

One of my all-time favorite linden body products is the Roger & Gallet Linden Blossom Moisturizing Shower Cream. Part of their Gentle Nature collection, this shower cream is enriched with shea milk…

Clean Well Ginger Bergamot Foaming Hand Wash ~ scented body products

Posted by Jessica on 17 May 2008 14 Comments

Clean Well Hand WashesClean Well’s Foaming Hand Washes are nature-based, germ-fighting cleansers that make use of botanical essences in a two new, intriguing ways. First, they feature scents created by the well-known natural perfumer Mandy Aftel of Aftelier. Second, they introduce a component called Ingenium, “a patented formulation of essential plant oils proven to kill 99.99% of the germs that make you sick.”

According to Clean Well’s website, the primary antibacterial ingredient in Ingenium is thyme oil, a natural substitute for triclosan or other chemicals. The other ingredients in the Foaming Hand Wash include aloe, white tea, and oat extract as skin conditioners and — oops! — a dash of sodium lauryl sulfate as lathering agent. The Hand Wash’s fragrance, however, is completely natural…

Maurer & Wirtz Tabac Original ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 1 May 2008 38 Comments

Tabac Original cologne

The German company Mäurer & Wirtz launched the Tabac Original fragrance in soap form in 1938. In 1955, Tabac Original, developed by perfumer Arturo Jordi-Pey, made its debut as a cologne. For years, every time I went to Europe, I would see faded advertisements for Tabac Original at tobacconists or pharmacies, and often, the white bottles of cologne would be “baking” in sunshine in the shops’ front windows. I assumed Tabac Original was “the European Old Spice” and went about my business – I didn’t need to sniff it. (My opinions of “cheap” — inexpensive — scents and Old Spice have since changed.) Tabac Original has dull packaging and is treated sloppily by shopkeepers, but the fragrance deserves some respect…
