The Swedish Summer Soap by Victoria Scandinavian Soap

Posted by Jessica on 6 July 2008 26 Comments

First things first: I strongly dislike summer. I’ll do anything possible to avoid high temperatures and strong sunlight, I never wear shorts or flip-flops, and I’m customarily immune to the appeal of any product claiming to evoke the experience of the beach. All the same, I couldn’t resist the packaging of The Swedish Summer Soap from Victorian Scandinavian Soap. The cheerful illustration of a sailboat beneath a sunny sky, the Swedish labeling on other side of the box (“Saltsjötvål” is the soap’s true name), and the promise that the soap “floats in fresh and salt water,” not that I have plans of using it anywhere other than my own shower — somehow, this all promises an ideal vision of a summer that would leave me feeling rosy-cheeked and optimistic rather than sweaty, dehydrated, and irritable…

Stetson by Stetson ~ fragrance review

Posted by Angela on 3 July 2008 53 Comments

Stetson Cologne, Matthew McConaugheyStetson Cologne, Tom Brady

As the cashier at Walgreen's rang up my sale, I watched the cash register's display. Stetson — $2.00. (Big sale at the fragrance aisle.) Stetson Black — $2.00. Charlie — DO NOT SELL. The cashier yawned and continued to toss items into my bag. Tabu — DO NOT SELL. I glanced up at her, but she seemed unconcerned and pushed my bag toward me. The last time I got a “do not sell” from the cash register, it was for a recalled bottle of Love's Baby Soft. What has to happen that's so bad that a bottle of drugstore perfume is recalled?

I happy to report that none of the bottles of perfume I bought that day burst spontaneously into flames or ate holes in my skin. In fact, Stetson may be my best two-dollar investment ever…

Mrs Meyers Clean Day Lavender Dish Soap ~ home fragrance review

Posted by Pia on 28 June 2008 18 Comments

Mrs Meyers Lavender dish soapSome of my first forays into the world of fragrance came through an interest in aromatherapy. I loved the idea that fragrance could be a source of healing as well as pleasure, and was enthralled with the concept of capturing some 'essence' of a plant or flower through distillation, for use in beauty, healing or massage.

I have therefore been delighted to see so many new natural and 'eco-friendly' cleaning product companies using essential oils to scent their products. It seems like a natural complement — many oils have disinfecting and antibacterial properties, as well as alleged psychological benefits, so why not combine them and be kind to the environment as well? Recently, the products have been getting increasingly sophisticated as well, with Seventh Generation coming up with rather delightful blends…

Sonoma Scent Studio Velvet Rose Shea Body Cream ~ scented body products

Posted by Jessica on 21 June 2008 8 Comments

As I’ve probably already mentioned, rose is my favorite fragrance note. I manage to refrain from reviewing rose-scented products too often, since that would seem repetitious to most readers (fellow rose-lovers exempted!), but June is the month of roses so I’ll indulge myself this time around.

I often wear complex rose-based fragrances like Les Parfums de Rosine’s Poussière de Rose or Bond no. 9’s West Side, and I search out rose-scented body products to match. Sometimes, however, I just crave a pure rose without any citrus, spice, wood, or vanilla notes. Sonoma Scent Studio’s Velvet Rose Shea Body Cream delivers a rose soliflore in lotion form, with artful simplicity and high-quality ingredients. The Velvet Rose scent gives the impression of a bunch of newly picked pink and red roses, still slightly moist with dew or rain…

Stetson Lady Stetson ~ perfume review

Lady Stetson perfume

Who doesn’t love a bargain? I know that I do. So when I saw that Perfumes: The Guide gave Stetson’s Lady Stetson four stars and compared it favorably to Chanel No. 22, I knew I had to try it. A trip to the drugstore and $4.95 later, I had an 11 ml bottle of Lady Stetson cologne spray in my hands.

The name “Lady Stetson” might lead you to believe that it smells like a set from Little House on the Prairie or like something a country western singer might wear. When you couple its name with the fact that it came out in 1986, you might even imagine it smelling like a sort of mega-cowgirl adorned in a rhinestone vest and flipping her bleached curls as she kicks up white ostrich ropers. Instead, Lady Stetson is a peachy, aldehydic floral with a sweet, medium-bodied drydown that might have suited Barbara Eden of I Dream of Jeannie better than Charlene Tilton of Dallas…
