Avon Bond Girl 007 ~ fragrance review

Posted by Angela on 4 May 2009 103 Comments

Avon Bond Girl

There’s a good chance that some of your first memories of perfume were of Avon. Maybe it was the fragrances themselves: Cotillion, Sweet Honesty, Timeless, or Bird of Paradise were a few. Or, more likely, it was the bottles shaped like everything from pianos to Model T cars to colonial dames. If you haven’t looked at an Avon catalog lately, you’re in for a surprise. First, no more kitschy bottles. Your chance to own Timeless bottled in a giant penny is gone. Next, although Sweet Honesty survived, most of the old perfumes have been replaced with newer, sexier products, like Imari, Christian Lacroix Rouge, and, yes, Bond Girl 007.

Avon began its life in 1886 in upstate New York as The California Perfume Company. David McConnell, who started the company, stumbled on the idea of selling perfume when he found that the free rose oil samples he handed out so that ladies would listen to his pitch to buy books were more popular than the books themselves. With the help of a local pharmacist he created the company’s first collection of fragrances, called Little Dot Perfumes. In 1939, The California Perfume Company changed its name to Avon. Avon still sells its products door-to-door, but now you can also buy them online or at special boutiques in malls.

Avon launched Bond Girl 007 in fall 2008 to coincide with the release of the new Bond film, Quantum of Solace…

Renew Elixir from Drops of Nature ~ scented body products

Posted by Jessica on 25 April 2009 22 Comments

Drops of Nature Renew Elixir

Renew Elixir is a fragrant essential oil blend created by the company Drops of Nature and designed to promote emotional balance and mental clarity. For me, Renew’s effects begin even before I unscrew the cap of its small bottle. This bottle, molded from frosted glass in the leaf shape and ornamented with a green tassel, fits comfortably into the palm of the hand, giving a soothing tactile sensation.

Renew Elixir feels gently emollient, thanks to its use of sweet almond oil; it absorbs easily into the skin, softly diffusing its scent for about fifteen minutes. In addition to the almond oil, Renew’s ingredients are essential oils with aromatherapeutic benefits: peppermint for alertness, as well as relief from headaches or nausea; bergamot and sweet orange for their uplifting effects on the mood; and lavender and clary sage for stress reduction…

Halle by Halle Berry ~ perfume review

Halle by Halle Berry fragrance bottleHalle by Halle Berry fragrance advert

Halle by Halle Berry is the debut fragrance from the very popular actress, launching this month under licensing arrangements with Coty. According to Ms. Berry…

[Before my fragrance] I was mixing other brands that shall remain nameless to make my own scent with fig and mimosa. With Halle, I added olibanum, which is an African root, which brings spice to the fragrance, and sandalwood, which smooths everything out and makes it yummy. It’s very sensual, very natural, very much reflective of the outdoors.*

The two nameless fragrances are rumored to be from L’Artisan Parfumeur; if that’s accurate, they’d presumably be Premier Figuier and Mimosa Pour Moi? Olibanum is another word for frankincense, which as any seasoned perfumista knows is a tree resin and not a root, but we needn’t split hairs: Halle is darned good for a celebrity fragrance, especially given the price — Halle is geared towards “mid tier” and mass market stores, so you’ll find it at Kohl’s and Sears instead of Nordstrom and Saks.

Halle opens FRUITY and SWEET (and yes, I’m screaming on purpose), as is very nearly requisite for a celebrity fragrance…

Sabon Patchouli Lavender Vanilla Body Oil ~ scented body products

Posted by Jessica on 4 April 2009 19 Comments

Sabon Patchouli Lavender Vanilla body oilOne litmus test of a store’s success in New York City is the frequency with which its logo shopping bags are spotted on the street and on the subway. I’ve noticed quite a few Sabon bags being carried and reused for other purposes by my fellow commuters, so I decided it was time for me to revisit one of this company’s local boutiques. I’ve visited Sabon a few times before, but I usually left empty-handed. Some of the products and scents just didn’t appeal to me, and others bothered me slightly by looking too similar to items from other brands (Agraria, Côté Bastide, Lush…).

On my latest trip to a Sabon shop, however, I ended up purchasing a bottle of Patchouli Lavender Body Oil. I liked its antique-looking, ribbed-glass bottle, the idea of concentrated, oil-based moisture for my dry elbows and legs, and oh yes, the scent. I surprised myself by being drawn to this fragrance, because it doesn’t smell like lavender essential oil, vanilla absolute, or actual patchouli; in other words, it’s definitely a synthetic scent…
