Vanilla fragranced lotions, revisited ~ scented body products

Posted by Jessica on 2 January 2011 36 Comments

I can’t believe it’s been nearly three years since I wrote a post about vanilla lotions, with suggestions for fragrance layering; but time has indeed flown, and the new year seems like as good a time as any to revisit some favorite themes. I still agree with my own recommendations from that earlier post, and now I can add another half-dozen ideas for products that feature vanilla, often mixed with other notes for results that may also appeal to the non-vanilla-lovers among us.

First, an option that’s traditional all around: Caswell-Massey Vanilla Orchid Hand & Body Lotion (above center), from the venerable toiletries company. Even though its name mentions the flower of the vanilla plant, this is a rich gourmand vanilla with a caramel note. If you’re really in the mood for some head-to-toe vanilla-bean sweetness, you could also try the matching shower gel, dusting powder, and Eau de Toilette. ($17, currently on sale for $12.75, at the Caswell-Massey website)

I have a weakness for certain high-end natural lines, and since I already loved certain skincare and haircare products from this company, it wasn’t surprising that I fell for John Masters Blood Orange and Vanilla Body Milk (above right). This light lotion is packed with antioxidant-rich oils, soothing botanicals like comfrey leaf, and extracts of vanilla, honeysuckle, blood orange oil, and grapefruit peel oil for fragrance. It smells like a Creamsicle…

From Penhaligon’s, a candle in their popular Elixir fragrance: “Opening with eucalyptus and the harmonising hot spices of cardamom, cinnamon and mace, the senses are massaged with the dark magic of Turkish rose and jasmine, sharpened with a twist of orange. Heat and smoke rise and the incense and woods mingle with the earthy rub of resins and spices. A touch of vanilla and the soft persistent roundness of hypnotic Tonka bean complete the atmospheric dry-down.” 30 hour burn time, $50 at MiN New York…

Ed Hardy Born Wild, Honore des Pres Love Coco, Crabtree & Evelyn Iris ~ quick perfume reviews

Posted by Robin on 9 December 2010 36 Comments

It’s beginning to dawn on me that I will not clear out my sample backlog by the end of the year, in fact, I’m thinking maybe I will never clear my sample backlog. All the same, it doesn’t hurt to try, right? Here are a few more unrelated quickie perfume reviews.

Ed Hardy Born Wild

Ed Hardy Born Wild perfume

Ed Hardy’s fourth fragrance for women, Born Wild, is just what you’d expect — a sweet-ish, middle-of-the-road fruity floral in their signature tattoo-inspired packaging. The fruit du jour: peach. Born Wild is light (think spring/summer rather than winter/fall), clean and inoffensive, and the lasting power is reasonable enough…

Compagnie de Provence 20th Anniversary Savon de Marseille ~ scented body product

Posted by Jessica on 13 November 2010 14 Comments

Compagnie de Provence 20th Anniversary Savon de Marseille

Compagnie de Provence has been offering contemporary interpretations of traditional Provençal soaps and toiletries since 1990. To mark its twentieth anniversary, the company has released a limited edition of its popular Savon de Marseille, a liquid hand soap packaged in a hefty glass bottle. For this occasion, the company commissioned artist Stephan Muntaner to create bottle designs based on the culture and legends of Marseille. The result is a set of three images that look like very colorful sailors’ tattoos, with each design named for a fish that would be caught in the city’s ancient port.

All three silkscreened images are vibrant and playful, even as they refer to Marseille’s oldest customs…
