Flying Fox and It’s Raining Men ~ shower gels from Lush

Posted by Robin on 10 April 2012 68 Comments

Lush Flying Fox

When I reviewed Lush’s powdery jasmine fragrance, Silky Underwear, I mentioned that I had once splurged on their Flying Fox shower gel in the small size (100 ml, which looks sooo much smaller in shower gel than it does in perfume). I didn’t think I’d ever spend that much on shower gel again, but then I started to miss it. Lo and behold, now I have another bottle, along with a small bottle of It’s Raining Men.

Flying Fox is yet another one of Lush’s many jasmine bombs. I’m all out of their Jasmine & Henna Fluff Ease at the moment, so I can’t compare the fragrance, but Flying Fox is a big sweet honeyed jasmine with ylang ylang, and is probably at least vaguely related to their Lust perfume. The smell is strong and rich — really, almost too strong and rich — and so is the gel itself…

Farmacia SS. Annunziata Perla and Lush 25:43 ~ fragrance reviews

Farmacia SS. Annunziata PerlaLush 25:43

Around the time I became a regular browser on the fragrance board at Makeup Alley, nearly a decade ago, there was plenty of discussion about gourmand fragrances. One board favorite, the sort of thing you only heard about on Makeup Alley or other fragrance chat sites in those days, was La Perla Eclix, a musky-sweet blend of citrus and vanilla. I swapped for a sample of Eclix and enjoyed it, and whenever I spotted its metallic alien-eye bottle in a store, I’d give it a spritz. Eclix was discontinued sometime around 2007, however, and I gradually forgot about it.

I happened to try two new citrus-gourmand fragrances within the past month; neither of them is an Eclix-alike, but if you’ve been craving something along those general lemon-vanilla lines, you might want to try Perla from Farmacia SS. Annunziata or 25:43 from Lush’s Gorilla Perfumes. The former line is a bit of mystery to me. It seems to be associated with the church of Santissima Annunziata in Bologna, or rather with the pharmacy originally affiliated with the church, which now exists as a separate business and storefront. (I’m piecing this together on my own, so I hope I’m correct; and I’m reminded of Santa Maria Novella, of course.)

Perla includes notes of lemon, osmanthus, amber and vanilla. It begins like a lemon drop, slightly sour but dusted with sugar…

Gud Floral Cherrynova Body Wash, Body Mist and Hand Cream ~ scented body products

Gud Floral Cherrynova

Güd (pronounced “good”) is a new line of fragranced bath and body products brought to us by Burt’s Bees. Its upbeat promotional campaign, complete with clever “scratch ‘n’ sniff” cards keyed to an animated video on Güd’s Facebook page and website, has been easy to spot in recent weeks. The products themselves have practical yet adorable packaging ornamented with cheerful, collage-like imagery of fruits and flowers. The full line of eight products is available in three fragrances, with which Güd has smartly covered three perenially popular categories: a citrus (Orange Petalooza), a vanilla (Vanilla Flame) and a light floral (Floral Cherrynova).

Cherry blossom-fragranced products have long been best-sellers for Bath & Body Works, of course, not to mention the cherry blossom scents released by everyone from L’Occitane to Guerlain. I don’t usually find cherry blossom perfumes compelling enough to wear on a regular basis, but I do enjoy this simple, delicate floral note in body-product formats. Güd’s version…

Chopard Casmir ~ fragrance review

Chopard Casmir advertanother Chopard Casmir advert

A few weeks ago a coworker asked, “You like chocolate martinis? I’ve got a great recipe for one.” To me a martini should be nothing but glacier-cold gin and a wink of vermouth, but I wanted to be friendly so I smiled and nodded. He started in on the recipe. “You take Godiva liqueur, Kahlua, Vanilla Stoli, and a little Baileys….” He ended by suggesting a garnish of a Hershey’s kiss. It was all I could do to keep my lunch down.

A few days later I searched the kitchen for something sweet. It was raining out, and cold, and I wanted a taste of something almost too rich to eat. Just then, my friend’s chocolate martini — a tiny one, for sure — would have been perfect.

That’s how I feel about Chopard Casmir. A daily diet of Casmir would burn out your nasal hair and leave you (and your bus mates) on the verge of nausea. But when the taste for something over-the-top rich and sweet hits, it’s hard to beat…

Lush Silky Underwear ~ perfume review

Posted by Robin on 7 February 2012 50 Comments

jasmine

They like jasmine over at Lush. Whenever I’m feeling particularly wealthy (a rare, and entirely delusional state) I pick up some of their Jasmine & Henna Fluff Ease hair pre-treatment (about $22 for 220g). My hair most certainly needs some pre-treatment, followed by some treatment and then perhaps some post-treatment, but I buy it for the (massive) wallop of jasmine, which lasts right through a shampoo (or two). Once, and only once, I bought a very small travel size of their Flying Fox shower gel ($10 for 100 ml, which mind you doesn’t look like nearly so much product in shower gel as it does in perfume) — another decent wallop of jasmine. And then there’s the Lust fragrance, which arguably out-jasmines both the Fluff Ease and the Flying Fox, and adds a hefty dose of candy to boot.

But their best known jasmine product is probably the Silky Underwear dusting powder. I love the smell,1 but I’m not a big user of dusting powder so I’ve never bought it. I was tempted when they released the same fragrance in a solid perfume,2 but I still didn’t bite…
