Parfums Montana Parfum de Peau ~ fragrance review

Posted by Angela on 1 December 2014 33 Comments

Montana Parfum de Peau

The best way I can sum up Parfums Montana Parfum de Peau (originally released as Montana) is like this: Imagine that Niki de Saint Phalle and La Nuit de Paco Rabanne had a daughter, and they amped her baby formula with steroids. Other kids at school made fun of her for her big nose, protruding eyes and exceptional height. And when she turned 19, she became a supermodel. Parfum de Peau may be the ultimate jolie laide fragrance.

Jean Guichard composed the original Montana perfume in 1986. It’s not clear when the name change took place, but by 1991 it was being referred to in the press as Parfum de Peau. It was apparently reformulated later in the 1990s by Edouard Fléchier, and has no doubt been tweaked since. Its notes include peach, cassis, plum, pepper, cardamom, ginger, rose, tuberose, jasmine, ylang ylang, carnation, sandalwood, patchouli, vetiver, civet, castoreum, amber, musk and frankincense.

In Perfume, Nigel Groom describes Parfum de Peau as an “avant-garde chypre.” As its list of notes hints, Parfum de Peau is something between a symphony and raucous nightclub…

Holiday fragrance gifts 2014, part 1

Posted by Robin on 28 November 2014 20 Comments

It’s Black Friday or Buy Nothing Day — but either way, window shopping never hurts. We’re kicking off our annual string of holiday gift posts with scented bath & body products. More to come over the next few weeks!

Dries Van Noten Par Frédéric Malle Body Butter

From Frédéric Malle, Dries Van Noten Par Frédéric Malle Body Butter: “This unique perfume of natural sandalwood, saffron, vanilla, Peruvian balm, and patchouli heart lends itself well to the form of an extra rich body cream, rich in shea butter and beeswax. This extraordinary comfort and silk like richness encapsulates the vision of Dries Van Noten’s world.” At Barneys, $185…

Posted by Robin on 28 November 2014 145 Comments

The Body Shop White Musk Libertine

Happy Black Friday! And happy Cheap Thrills Friday. Our community project for today: wear something that costs $50 or below, double bonus points if it costs $25 or below. No points for wearing something expensive that you bought cheaply via a sample or decant or somesuch! We’re trying to find real bargains here.

As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you aren’t participating in the community project.

I’m wearing The Body Shop White Musk Libertine. It is $24 for 30 ml, but only if you don’t wait for one of The Body Shop’s frequent sales. I paid $12 for my bottle.

Reminder: next Friday, 12/5, is Friday At The Mall…

L’Occitane Arlesienne ~ perfume review

Posted by Robin on 6 November 2014 35 Comments

L'Occitane Arlesienne

L’Occitane’s new Arlésienne is the brand’s first pillar fragrance for women in a good long while (they’ve been occupied with La Collection de Grasse and limited editions and whatnot). It reportedly celebrates the women of Arles in Provence, and draws inspiration from traditional Arlésienne dress and the Venus of Arles; it was introduced in conjunction with a Christian Lacroix exhibit, L’Arlésienne, at the Chapelle de la Charité.

The opening of the Eau de Toilette is fruity and tart (rhubarb, maybe?) and vivid — it’s a happy fragrance, and even happier on a paper blotter, where the top notes linger…

Clinique Aromatics Elixir ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 29 October 2014 52 Comments

Clinique Aromatics Elixir

I remember trying Clinique Aromatics Elixir1 in my early twenties (didn’t like it then) and forgetting it existed till I met someone 13 years later who wore it all the time. When I first met her, I said: “You’re wearing Aromatics Elixir, aren’t you?” How could I remember a perfume I had tried so long ago and never wore again? (I was proud of myself…what a memory! what a Nose!) But I can take only partial credit for this feat; Aromatics Elixir is distinctive, and one of the few perfumes with a strong oak moss note that I now enjoy.

Last week, when I reviewed Aramis (a fragrance that shares Aromatics Elixir’s perfumer, Bernard Chant), I admitted oak moss is not one of my favorite fragrance ingredients — an understatement. Oak moss is something I imagine as a brittle, sticky thread that takes over other ingredients as a virus overwhelms a host…
