Dita Von Teese Rouge and Erotique ~ fragrance review

Posted by Angela on 27 July 2015 19 Comments

Dita Von Teese Rouge and Erotique

Like drag queens, burlesque performers fascinate me. They’re courageous enough to flout convention and adopt a persona that isn’t accepted at P.T.A. meetings, and they do it all in front of an audience. Although they might perform simply for their own satisfaction, there’s a reason the house is full. Some us wish we had the guts to be ourselves in such an outrageous way.

Dita Von Teese is counting on it. Besides her first perfume, Dita Von Teese, she’s released three other fragrances playing on angles of her burlesque persona: Fleurteese, which I haven’t smelled; and Rouge and Erotique, which I review here. You may not want to put on a corset and dance in a giant martini glass, the fragrances seem to say, but give us a try for a taste of that feeling…

Pacifica Tahitian Gardenia ~ fragrance review

Posted by Angela on 6 July 2015 24 Comments

pac-gard-s

While shopping for an air mattress so I could sleep in the cool basement — it’s been a scorcher of a week so far — I wheeled my cart past the organic foods section and saw a rack of Pacifica roll-on perfumes on sale, including Tahitian Gardenia. In summer, I sometimes crave gardenia. At the same time, although I love big white flowers on other people, gardenia wears like a costume on me. It’s as if I’m wearing a fabulous hat that I love for about an hour — after which I wrench the blasted thing off my head so I can feel like myself again…

Le Couvent des Minimes Silky Shower Cream & Refreshing Body Moisturizer ~ scented body product reviews

Le Couvent des Minimes Silky Shower Cream & Refreshing Body Moisturizer

I own far fewer bath and body products than you might expect, especially in relation to my surplus of perfumes and lipsticks. Just two weeks ago, in fact, I realized that I was down to one partially used bottle of shower gel (not counting my secret stash of LUSH Rose Jam, of course) and half a bottle of unscented body lotion. Spring is always a good time to try new body products, so I recently introduced two items from Le Couvent des Minimes into my morning regimen.

Le Couvent des Minimes is named for a historic convent in the French town of Mane, and its formulas and fragrances are supposedly inspired by the convent’s gardens of curative herbs and flowers…

Fire, Twigs & Smoke ~ home fragrance reviews

Posted by Kevin on 21 April 2015 32 Comments

home fragrance items

I live in a house that’s almost 100 years old; with me are two male cats (and their three litter boxes — yes, they have more “bathrooms” than I do) and my partner (who cooks all the time — seafood, Indian, Thai, Burmese, Mexican, Middle Eastern and Italian food — pungent stuff!) Apart from doing a “country-house-style” cleaning a few times a year (scrubbing walls, floors, ceilings and everything in between) I rely on scented products to make my environment smell a little better than it would if I simply relied on open windows and elbow grease. I’m a big user/addict of, pardon the cuteness, candles (fire), diffusers (twigs) and incense (smoke).

Like all scented products, home fragrance prices have skyrocketed; this post will concentrate on “affordable” (or at least reasonably priced) items. Please chime in with your own favorites in all categories. The comments from my recent soap post provided sensational ideas for soap fiends; I hope this article will generate the same response for home fragrances fanatics…
