Perfume review: Carven Ma Griffe

Posted by Robin on 17 May 2005 64 Comments

Carven Ma Griffe fragrance ad

Ma Griffe was launched in 1946 by the design house Carven. It was created by nose Jean Carles, who had apparently completely lost his sense of smell by that time (see Michael Edwards, Perfume Legends, p. 96). The fragrance notes are gardenia, greens, galbanum, citrus, aldehydes, clary sage, jasmine, rose, sandalwood, vetiver, orris, ylang ylang, styrax, oakmoss, cinnamon, musk, benzoin, and labdanum.

Ma Griffe is classified as a floral chypre…

Fragrance review: Coty Muguet des Bois

Coty Muguet des Bois fragrance

If you are looking for a lily of the valley fragrance and don’t care for Diorissimo, Muguet des Bois by Coty is worth a try. I have not been able to find a list of the notes online, but this is a soliflore and I don’t smell any notes other than lily of the valley with a touch of green. Body Time Egyptian Musk oil

Last night I was looking through the list of fragrances I have reviewed so far, and was rather disturbed to see how few would qualify as affordable. I distinctly remember thinking, in some now distant past, that $100 was an awful lot to spend for one small bottle, now, it hardly fazes me. Surely there are still lots of wonderful fragrances to be had for under $25, right?

All of which is a roundabout way of introducing today’s fragrance, Egyptian Musk by Body Time. Body Time was established in California in 1970 as The Body Shop, and eventually sold their name to the British firm of the same name. They are best known for their China Rain scent, and they also have a full line of perfume and essential oils. For DIYers, they carry a few basic perfume making supplies, including a perfume & cologne base…

Latest cheap candle discovery: Soyology Venus

Posted by Robin on 8 April 2005 5 Comments

Soyology Venus candle

Soyology candles are made from a blend of soy wax, and I think soy is supposed to be better for you, although I have no idea why. My primary interest in Soyology is the price: $12 for an 8 oz jar with a lid. Perfect…
