Chanel Allure Homme & Allure Homme Sport ~ fragrance reviews

Posted by Kevin on 20 March 2008 37 Comments

Chanel Allure Homme fragrance for men

There are plenty of new men’s fragrances to review this spring, but before reviewing Chanel Allure Homme Édition Blanche, I thought it might be interesting to smell and “discuss” the previous Allure offerings for men (both created by Chanel house perfumer Jacques Polge) — Allure Homme and Allure Homme Sport.

Chanel Allure Homme (1998)

Allure Homme contains bergamot, mandarin, citron zest, pepper, vetiver, patchouli, sandalwood, tonka bean and labdanum. The fragrance starts off with an artificial-smelling, alcohol-y and acidic accord; these opening notes are, to my nose, ugly, harsh and sour. Thankfully, Allure Homme’s opening notes begin to subside within 10 minutes’ wear and what comes next is a hazy, well-blended mix of woody, vanillic and earthy notes…

Perfume in the news: Nicole Kidman & dogs

Posted by Robin on 1 December 2007 11 Comments

The article alleged that Kidman, who is the face and celebrity spokeswoman for Chanel No.5, had claimed that Jo Malone's White Jasmine and Mint was her favourite perfume.

It also alleged that the Moulin Rouge star had been "dabbing it on whenever she had a moment", when she was in London to promote her new film The Golden Compass.

— Nicole Kidman is suing the Daily Telegraph for saying she wears perfumes other than Chanel no. 5. Read more in The Guardian.

The dog fragrance is a manifestation of the luxe dog life in the last decade. “It’s the age of dog yoga, pet reiki, veterinary antidepressants, feline organ transplants, lumbar support pet beds, organic kibble, hand-stitched dog clothing boutiques and pet-toy manufacturing tycoons,” explained Michael Schaffer, a journalist who is writing a book about the nation’s obsession with dogs called “One Nation Under Dog,” to be published by Henry Holt.

Chanel & the bloggers

Posted by Robin on 11 September 2007 12 Comments

To generate “buzz” about the special Web site, Chanel has been communicating with the writers of 200 blogs around the world, including Beauty Addict (beautyaddict.blogspot.com), Blogdorf Goodman (blogdorfgoodman.blogspot.com) and Kristopher Dukes (kristopherdukes.com). The bloggers received a mysterious box offering them a preview of the special Web site along with an inside look at the making of a sexy commercial that is the centerpiece of the campaign, featuring the young actress Keira Knightley.

— Read more in Chanel Intensifies Online Effort in today's New York Times, which details Chanel's efforts to get attention for the new mademoiselle-forever.com website for Coco Mademoiselle perfume.

Chanel No. 5 Eau Premiere ~ fragrance review

Nicole Kidman for Chanel No. 5 Eau Premiere

If you want to know what Chanel’s new No. 5 Eau Première smells like, try this: take a bottle of Chanel No. 5 Eau de Parfum and position it next to a window, preferably overlooking a hedge of roses, where the sun will cast a pinkish light through the bottle. Now cross the room and squint your eyes so that your vision of the bottle of No. 5 blurs. That is Eau Première.

That didn’t work? Try this: picture in your mind the Andy Warhol painting of a No. 5 bottle. Now imagine it repainted by Renoir. This, too, is Eau Première.

Maybe visual comparisons aren’t for you. Then I’ll quote from the “Fashion Rocks” supplement to this September’s Vogue magazine:

A perfume like Chanel No. 5 is a little like the Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds, an album that did not initially go gold but is considered one of the greatest albums ever made, and has sold a ton over the long run. Similarly, the reformulated Chanel No. 5 Eau Première, launched this fall for a younger market, is akin to a dance-club remix of something written pre-American Idol…
